Today I had to tell DS
that our dog died last night. It was VERY unexpected. Max is 5 years old, and has had worries about death (even though he hasn't had any real "direct experience" with it) for several months. It was one of the most heartbreaking conversations I've ever had. He kept saying, "I miss Jasper tooooo much! What did I do to make him leave?" Then, he would try to find ways to get to heaven (giant balloon, kite, etc.) or ways to get Jasper back down (have someone push hiim, etc.) He was a very special, loyal pet, and DH and I are devastated as well. It's soooo hard to be the one who is supposed to know the answers...and I don't have any. My 18 month old daughter keeps throwing food on the floor and yelling for him as well. Sometimes being a mommy is sooooo hard!

That is so heartbreaking. We just had to explain a death in our family to our kids too.
If you can, try to rent "All Dogs Go To Heaven". I was told it was a good movie to have those conversations. Several times during our talk, my son mentioned the movie saying "So she's in heaven & we can't visit her? But one day we'll see her again soon, right? It's just like in All Dogs Go To Heaven?"
It's tough dealing with your own loss & trying to explain the unexplainable to someone you're not even sure understands it.
