Had a young patron who didn't know who Billy Joel is?
Just had a young college aged student who came into the library looking for some info on Billy Joel (for a class) and she didn't know who he was and that he was from LI. I told her he was once married to Christie Brinkley and they have a daughter together. She knew who Christie Brinkley was.
How do you grow up on LI and NOT know who Billy Joel is? Even just one song?

Wow. My dad works in a middle school library and has a poster of the Mona Lisa up - one of the students asked why he had a picture of Cher up on the wall!!! C'mon now.

I know we all have different tastes in music but most LI'ers at least know who he is even if they don't listen to his music.

Thats really wierd, its not like Billy Joel was popular for a year and then faded away. He is still extremely popular, even today. Thats almost like saying you don't know who the Beatles are!

How do you NOT know him especially here. Seriously im in my early 20's and Im a huge fan.
Sometimes you just gotta wonder how they tie their shoes in the morning!
When I worked in retail someone saw the cover of TV guide. This was like 2 weeks after Sunny Bono died... They were like HE DIED... His funeral was pretty much on TV I mean there was so much media coverage... Do you live under a rock

because kids today live in their own little bubble and don't have parents who teach them how to expand their horizons and look beyond their own front yards.
They grow up sitting in front of a TV or computer listen to prefabricated, computer-generated music and not to an actual artist who plays an instrument, writes music, and actually has talent!

To defend today's youth, I can say that all of my students know who Billy Joel is and all of them know who the Beatles are. Well, maybe with the exception of the first graders, their my raw meat that I get to expose to everything this year
