Doctor's Visit (LONG)

I brought Emma to the doctor on Saturday for a routine visit and shots - I asked the covering doctor to check her ear because she has been waking up at night (again!), and I saw her swatting at her ear the day before. Low and behold her ear infection didn't go away so they upped her medicine to Augmentim (sp?) for another 10 days....

The covering doctor asked me about her eating/sleeping schedule, and I mentioned that she eats 7 4-6oz bottles in a 24 hour period, plus cereal 2 x's a day. She told me that is WAY too much formula. That she should not be eating at night, and I should let her cry for a while before I give her a bottle at night - and IF i do give her a bottle to give maybe 4 oz's.

Does anyone know how much is too much formula in 1 day? And if you have gone thru something like this, what did you do to change it?

How old is she?
Miranda is almost 7 months and drinks anywhere from 18-22oz of formula or breastmilk a day and eats solids (cereal, fruits, veggies, meats) 2-3 times a day.
It doesn't sound like she's eating too much to me. Also my DD was waking for night feedings up until about 3-4 weeks ago and actually last night woke around 11pm and was hungry.
There is no way that if I knew my baby was hungry I could just let them cry but that's just me.

I can't comment too much, but I have been told that the general rule of thumb is 2.5 oz per pound, so if your baby weighs 15 lbs, they should have 37.5 oz per day (if my math is correct)

Emma is almost 5 months old and weighs 16lbs, 12 oz.


ETA: I just did the math - That puts her at 40oz of formula a day.

Monkeybride is right- that no longer applies when they get older..

My ped told me that DS should be eating @ least 24oz a day (he is 6months old) and 3 meals.... (however he eats more like 28, and they said thats fine)


Anything over 32- is too much though!


Could you try and push it to 4 7-8oz/day???

If you get enough in through the day, there is no reason for her or him to eat @ night....

After they hit (i think) 12lbs, the metabolism can make it through the night... HTH

I know back when Kevin was 5 months (he was also about 16 lbs and change then) - the dr gave me a rule - over 32 oz - give more cereal. Under 24 oz - give less cereal - maybe that will help. I know some dr's magic number is 40oz - my dr was 32 oz - after that she said too much iron and something else (can't remember) for their system from formula. Also at 5 months I was also on fruits and veggies so that helps night waking for food because he was more full from the day of eating.

Kevin started waking up at night as he got older - but I never/rarely fed him. We just found other ways to get him back to sleep. Dr said not to get him in that habit or snacking. Luckily it worked for us.

I ha d this problem whith my DD they told me she was taking in too much formula so to subsitute with water
