I started with 1/2 of a cheerio and 1/2 puffs and moved on from there. Be prepared for some gagging and choking (I had to put my finger down Talia's throat twice!  ) but it is all part of the learning process.
Also - a good food to start with is pastina or abc pasta - since its small and soft.

I used to make her pastina with butter and parm. cheese (and a bit of milk) to make it creamy-and tasty!
I did cheerios, puffs too.

You found pastina in England??? I have to import it! 
Sorry to crash here, but I'm a pastina fiend  You can boil it with half a bullion cube and then add butter and parmasean cheese - my grandmother and my mom always put a lightly scrambled raw egg in there while it was cooking for a bit of protein...
