Question for Dog Owners...

Do you find that your dog's paws scratch hardwood floors? DH's friend asked us to babysit his dog while he goes on vacation but DH is concerned that his paws will scratch our floors. The dog (Bosco) is a black lab.

Thanks for any advice! Chat Icon

To be honest, Hard Wood Floors have a bad name unless they are lacquered a billion times. The tiniest thing can scratch hard wood floors, a grain of sand, high heels, dogs nails. So to answer your question, yes, they can scratch. Some peole get these nail covers for things like this. Others get runners for the main areas where dogs roam. It is mostly if the dog is running. My uncle has a great dane mix and their floor was finished from her. But theygot it redone. Sorry to ramble. What I'm saying is that there are so many other everyday things that can scratch a floor (the finish in essence).

Yes we have scratches in front of our bay window. Where she freaks out if she sees a squirrel. Everywhere else is ok.....

Re: Question for Dog Owners...

If a dog's nails are clipped to the proper length then they should not scratch the floor during normal walking. If they are long, or the dog tries to dig for some reason then yes, the floor might get damaged.

I have oak floors not the prefinished kind at Home Depot and my dogs nails are clipped and I still have scratches. I think its more the type of wood floor than anything. She's a great dog too....just those damn squirrels....Chat Icon For a week or so you should be fine with this dog.

BTW I have a 75 lb American Bulldog. Much different than a 10 lb Maltese walking around

I have a shih tzu and hardwood floors...and we have some small scratches if you look REALLY carefully, but I don't think they are from him...

Re: Question for Dog Owners...

I don't think the dog's nails have scratched the wood...I know that chairs have though

Re: Question for Dog Owners...

I have a 55lb pit bull and an 85lb yellow lab - and my maple floors that were brand new 3 years ago show the scratches. They're not horrible - but they're there.

I think if it's just a one week dog-sitting gig, it shouldn't do much damage. My dogs are inside quite a bit.....and they feed off each other's excitement, so they're quite rowdy.

My parents have the original wood floors and they do scratch. But mainly from furniture and people, not so much the dog.
