So I'm sitting here after a bad day of M/S happily chewing the new Orbit lemon-lime gum
And my colleague starts freaking me out because he said the phenylalanine can cause mental retardation in my baby!
Is this true????

Seriously as someone who had severe MS with both pregnancies, if it is making you feel better than chew away

Phenylalanine is dangerous to the fetus if the mother has PKU. Then there is a definite risk of brain damage. Other studies show maybe some subtle changes if taken in large quantaties (like 5 times the normal value). So, phenylalanine in moderation is probably ok.
