Cord Blood Registry?

I keep getting all these emails and flyers about CBR, any opinions on this? Anyone ever do it?

I did Viacord, which is very similar. It is very expensive, and very unlikely to be needed. Plus there are public banks, so its not the only source of help if your child does need it.

I had the money though, and knew I wouldn't forgive myself if something happened and I didn't do it.

There alot of pros and cons to this issue. and many posts. What I can say is do your research and do what you think is best for your family. There is no right or wrong answer.

We decided to use the Northshore Manhasset public bank, ( I delivered there). It did not cost us anything and we are happy with our decision.

I have not looked into this yet but I was wondering what is the difference between the public banks and the non-public ones?

I never knew about public banks? Are they simliar to the private ones?

viacord has the highest #'S OF VIABLE CELLS and is most recommended by LI oncologists/hematologists.

I used viacord and LOVED them. I am a rare case in the fact that when my daughter was born we had to call them and almost had to use the cord blood. My daughter had a bunch of complications when she was born and the Dr.'s were saying that they were going to have to do a few platelet transfusions because her levels were so low. I was never so overjoyed in the fact of going with my gut and choking up the money for something i though we would never need. They were great, they sent the man back to NY and he stayed with her blood until the dr.'s said kaylee's levels were ok. I would rather spend the money with the thought of never having to use it then not and being stuck.

We used a public bank at LIJ. They have a big program there now. Not all hospitals have it. You'd have to call your hospitals to ask. What they do is take the placenta after you give birth and see if it's usable. If it is, they come to you and explain the program, take a vile of blood from you and swab the baby's cheek with a cotton swab. Then they have you sign a bunch of consent forms. In essence you are donating your cord blood. If the cells from your cord blood are a match for someone who needs them, they will be given to that person. However, if God forbid you need them one day and they are still available, you can get them back.
