Question re: choosing godparents

I'm Catholic and my DH is Jewish (never practiced, did get bar mitzvahed sp?). We both want to bring up our children Catholic, so I was thinking about choosing godparents for the baptism....do they have to both be Catholic?

Most of our friends and husband's family are not Catholic (I'm an only child).

I'm not even really sure how the bapitsm process works...

I'm pretty sure that only one has to be Catholic.

My family is Catholic and my niece's godfather is Jewish. It depends upon the church, though. Her own parish wouldn't allow it, so they went to their old parish which only required one godparent to be Catholic.

Re: Question re: choosing godparents

While it is customary for two Godparents, only one is necessary. However, if you have two, both must be baptized Catholic. You can have one who is Christian of a different faith (i.e., Lutheran, Baptist, etc.), but, this one can only act as a Christian Witness. You must be registered with the particular Church you wish to have your baby baptized in and must attend a class or classes (all Churches are different as to what they require). Both Godparents should have received all their Sacraments up to this point (i.e., Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation). Again, check with your Church.
Good luck to you.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Question re: choosing godparents

I'm Catholic and DH is Greek Orthodox. We agreed to raise our children Catholic. We chose my mother (Catholic) to be our son's godmother and my BIL (Greek Ortho) to be the godfather. The Church said it was fine as long as one is Catholic but both had to be Christian.

My church said they should be people who you feel will lead your child by example. However, in order to sign a baptismal certificate they must be Catholic. Only one Godparent needs to sign - therefore - only one needs to be Catholic.

I would check with your parish - it appears each has their own rules.

It might depend on the parish. I have seen people post on here that the godparents have been young and some have had two godmothers or godfathers instead of one of each. The parish we were looking into had to have them be over the age of 16, needed to be baptised and confirmed and their had to be a godmother and godfather.

Re: Question re: choosing godparents

All depends on the Parish. I needed to have (1) catholic, baptized and confirmed person and (1) christian person.

But I know at a friend's parish they both had to be confirmed catholics and hand in copies of their confirmation papers.

I agree. I know someone who had one catholic & the other was jewish. Another church insisted that both are catholic.

Definitley ask you church. each one is different. Our church requires only one of the godparents to be Roman Catholic. My brother's church required both to be.

I guess it depends on the church because both godparents had to be Catholic, baptised and confirmed.

This is the same for my parish as well. Your best bet is to contact your church and see what their requirements are.

Re: Question re: choosing godparents

We have the same, I'm catholic, DH was raised Jewish but no longer practices. My church only required that one be Catholic, but to be honest we didn't see how a non-Catholic would be able to make sure our child was raised Catholic if something happened to us, so we went with 2 Catholics.
