Sometimes I wish I didnt find things out in the office

Yesterday the Manager calls everyone in his office and tells us we are a start up company and the company really had no policy about raises or reviews so they had to implement policy and procedures. He knows that we were promised raises and reviews back in January and it didnt happen. Then of course came up with lame excuses. blah blah blah

then he tells us ya know we're a start up company and it takes at least 5 years for a company to even break even. We're not making any money so we really cant afford to give you raises (mind you some of us have been there since Oct 2004) but we're going to do so anyway.

Then our managers spoke to us individually about what we were getting. Not everyone was happy about what they were getting. Me especially considering I was promoted to Supervisor in August, then pushed into booking as a regular agent. So I got basically squat out of the deal.

So today I am in work and I am working on the receptionests computer to log some info. I go to close out of the file and I see the management meeting notes that states "The company is doing well financially, however we are in no position to be giving raises but will do so anyway"

I was so angry. We (the staff on the call center floor) get yelled at, screamed out, talked down too, abused verbally over the phone, over worked, stressed out and often at times hate to answer the phone and the end of the memo said "but all the hard work is greatly appreciatd"

Well guess what your appreciation is not going to pay my bills.

Now that I know this I am even more mad, and I cant say anything to anyone. I think it's time to be polishing the resume. The hardest part of all, I really love the people I work with

Chat Icon Start up's are so tough. I'm sorry!! I would say that if it bothers you enough to the point that you feel angry at work, maybe it's time to look for something else. I'm not sure if the compensation is bad to begin with...but if it isn't and you got some raise, even if small, try to think it of the larger picture (admin costs, expenses, debt, etc. for the company)and see if that makes you a little more content. But if you're underpaid and unhappy about the raises, I would look elsewhere. It's not worth it...we spend so much time at work, find something that makes you happy!

I would definitely start looking for another job. at the end of the day, you have bills to pay and you're not being appreciated.

sounds to me like they are totally taking advantage. I think a lot of companies are forgetting that this is not the early 2000's when they could get away with the "you're lucky to just have a job" attitude. Chat Icon

start updating that resume! Chat Icon

See, I disagree...it depends on whether you're compensated well to begin with. The memo doesn't sound so bad to me. They admit that they're doing well financially (which can mean they're raking it in or they're in the black...who knows!) but they advise not to give raises (they're not is a position to could mean that they don't have that much left after overhead) and do so anyway. It sounds like they're trying to be fair. Chat Icon

Re: Sometimes I wish I didnt find things out in the office

Thank you.

I think my anger is towards the powers that be. They make decisions without really thinking how it's going to effect everyone else. They dont get screamed at by customers making irrational demands. (I had one person screaming at me that she requested a quote for travel and no one respond. I finally told her lady we're not the psychic friends network and by telling us you want to take a cruise anytime from anywhere to somewhere that goes to a warm place does not exactly fulfill the requirements for a quote"

I just dont like being lied too by people I am to be respecting.

Chat Icon I'm so sorry!! Chat Icon Start ups are so hard, because half the time "the powers that be" are completely clueless and trying to figure it all out at the same time as the employees. If you're really unhappy, look elsewhere...again, you SHOULD be happy.

But I'm speaking from experience because my sister's DH has his own construction co. and my cousin works for him as an admin. asst. - she knows all his financials but is still paid pretty low...as the biz grows everyone will get more money but it's tough at first because it's $$ to run a biz.

Don't take it personally...it's work...that's it! Chat Icon

excellant point.

I know they have a lot of costs to cover. Electric, cleaning company, lease, ticketing company who does our off hour ticketing, licenses for booking, computers, phone bills, cable modem, website, and other company expenses, but the company has made so many promises to us and just once I would have liked for them to follow through

that's the exact reason why I would start looking. what's to stop them from doing this again next year? Chat Icon

Thank you so much. Start up companies are great to be apart of, to watch it grow and mature but the down side it takes a while for it to get off the ground. Oh yea our top executives are ex-cop, ex-investigator, accounting firm and head of another company. Not one person has any travel experience. So it's all a complete learning experience for all.

I am happy about what I do and enjoy the fun in the office, just unhappy about how management works.
