Baby Sign Language
I'm planning on trying to teach the baby some baby sign language. My cousin and his wife did with their youngest 2 kids and she said it made such a difference. It really cut down on the crying and tantrums because the baby could sign what he/she wanted. They thought the kids basic signs like "juice" and "cookie" and "hungry" and things like that.
I was just wondering if anyone else was planning on doing it?

I ran out of options with my son when he was younger.. he had an OUTSTANDING comprehension, he was just late to talk. As soon as we taught him EAT and DRINK, our world changed. Thats all I ever had to teach him.. very soon after that he started expressing himself more.
I used the book "Sign with your baby" the authors last name is Garcia. You can probably get a used one from ebay pretty cheap.. if not its less than $20 new at borders! Good Luck!

Thanks! I just bought the book for $6.00 on half.com  There is also a website that my cousin gave me that she used for the kids.

Yes, I am ABSOLUTELY planning to do this. I had to teach two babies to do this when I was a nanny. They were speech and language delayed and this made all the difference in the world. I also plan on using pictures. As they get older, they are able to pick out the picture of what they want. My mom is a speech and language pathologist and gave us video tapes on how to teach a baby sign language, although, I know she'll be the first implementing it! This is one of the things I'm totally looking forward to!

DH and I both actually agrred that signing--true out signing with our children would be freaky..lol.. but let me tell you when you have a child that constantly refers to EVERYTHING as "eh" and progressively gets louder, you will try SOS if need be!!! LOL...
BTW-- thats the book I was saying up top! Great deal!!!!

(Not meaning to hijack your post, just wanna give my 2 cents!)
With my son it helped ease our pain into his later speech development. Our pediatrician would be able to ask him to point to the blue block, or pick up the yellow ball or wheres the window, and he would respond perfectly.. with an "EH!" and a pointed finger.. EVERYTHING was EH!.. no matter how hard we tried to teach him words.. (and i used to substitute teach early childhood ed).. He knew a few words.. momma dada uh-oh up oof-foof (woofwof) but other than that he was kinda limited. He would get so frustrated cause he could understand us and we couldnt understnad him. It was almost like you could see his mind working a billion MPH, but when he opened up his mouth nothing formed came out.. at least nothing we could understand. Two very simple signs helped ease the tension.. I will never forget his face the first time I asked him if he wanted to eat, and signed.. and when he answered me back with babble, I signed eat and handed him his sandwich I swear I was expecting to hear HALLELUJAH come outta his mouth!  From here on his repetition increased, and his vocabulary, but I wish Iwould have bought the book sooner! JMHO-HTH

As a speech pathologist I believe that teaching sign to your baby will not delay their language development. In fact, it enables them to communicate at an earlier age. Children have an intent to communicate before the speech mechanism is developed enough to communicate verbally. By introducing sign, the child is able to develop language skills at an earlier age. Verbal speech is much easier and faster for a child to produce than sign language so as the child becomes able to verbalize what he wants, the use of sign will fade out. As long as the child is developing normally and there are no other cognitive, speech, hearing, or language delays, children will learn to speak if they are in the presence of spoken language. And if there are some type of delays, the use of sign language will help them to communicate. I teach sign to a lot of the kids I work with and am planning to teach my baby to sign as well.

My MIL was just telling me that our cousin's daughter is learning to sign. I thought it was interesting and will definitely consider this.
