I don't think anyone realized how BIG this was until late Tuesday when the floods came. As for having the President on-site, that really doesn't do too much to help the people that are in trouble. Also, his presence would divert attention and resources to what really needs to be done.

the last thing Louisiana and Mississippi need right now is a motorcade (which probably would have trouble getting around) of the president and all his men creating more havoc down there. It would be more harm than good especially if the people are that unstable. What they need is more national guard, more red cross and more volunteers. Bush can't do anything for them while there.

I agree
I am not a Bush fan, nor am I his biggest critic.. but I still do not see how his PRESENCE in this situation or him physically being In New Orleans/Mississippi would make what is going on any better.
If anything, the security risks that come along with him going to New Orleans.. and the fact it would disrupt EVERYTYING trying to fly him in there with secret service, etc.. it would be a logistical nightmare and MORE confusion that its worth
.. and mostly the fact that him being there would most likely HALT what NEEDS to be done (rescuing those who can still perhaps be saved.. and time is of the essence here!) .. logically and rationally, it makes no sense to have him BE THERE at this point
Let me just add that these people probably could care less to have Bush there to physically comfort them or show support... the majority of them remaining have NO access to the outside world at this point, they have no power, no communcation - NADA. They wouldn't be able to see a press conference with him even if he were 2 miles away - they are STRANDED. If I were in those folks shoes, I'd much rather see a Red Cross volunteer/police officer/rescure worker show up at my door than President Bush offering me a hug

I rread in Newsday that this city should have never even existed where it did and its luck to have existed for 287 years...seemed harsh to me. I wonder if they WONT rebuild!
Not saying this to offend anyone, but there are lots of places that should not allow housing or businesses to build, but they do anyway. If you remember all the damage that was done a while back when the Mississippi River overflowed, many of those homes were in a flood plain. There are also lots of homes built on cliffs overlooking water that are dangerous.
I do think New Orleans will rebuild, though. The people there are very proud of their city and it has an aura and an identity so different from other cities.

You are right thats why I think it should have haoppned right away not now! These people arent seeing any help...
Juney you know I love ya  .. but even after it first happened, there would have been no reasonable way for the President to go into New Orleans when the beginning of the floods were just starting to grow.. it would have served no purpose to have him there.. the main point was assessing the damage and figuring out ways to SAVE these people, not having a figurehead running into a danger zone and risking more lives in the process

they are seeing help, tons of help ... unfortunately this situation is NOT an easy fix. It's going to take a looong time to get things in working order and to calm people down. I'm not saying anyone is wrong to feel abandoned, but patience is key here in order to help EVERYONE. There are A LOT of people, not only just dead that need to be recovered but I'd like to think there are people that can still be saved. There is only so much to be done so fast. It's an unfortunate event - it's massive, it's completely uncomrehensible to most people and it's going to be very difficult for a long time. It's very easy to say "why aren't they helping?" when in fact they are, but it's not going to be a 1-2-3 thing. That's what you have to realize.

Well by the time the President got to Ground Zero... I am fairly certain that they were just beginning the search and rescue and clean up process. AND the fact that access to NY was a lot easier (even though security was at a high) than getting into/out of New Orleans at this point
A natural disaster and a terrorist attack are two very different things, IMO .. though the city was crushed on 9/11 and thereafter, there WAS still access to the media and food avaiable, shelter, clothing, electricity .. etc. People weren't being evacuated and forced to leave NY.. Its a far differnent scenario
