does anyone else go back and forth between wanting to OWN a home or not?

I must admit, the "homey" side of me would love to own my own home, with a big kitchen, backyard...the works.

BUT the "adventurer" in me that loves to travel (every year) and fly by the seat of my pants does not want the tethering or added expense of a mortgage, property tax, insurance...ecetera.

anyone else...or anyone care to debate the merits?

I had that argument with Dh on our honeymoon. We were floating around the lagoon and i looked at him and asked, HOUSE? What the heck do we need a house for?

I only want a house/condo/coop for retirement/investment purposes. One day, DH and I will be too old to work, and I'd like to know we wouldn't have to pay a constantly rising rent.

But if I had my way, all we would do is travel.

we went through that same exact dilemma a few months back. Some days I really wanted a house and others, I really, reallly liked living in a luxuary building with all the amenities and maintance taken care of. I won this round, we held off on the house thing and are staying in our apt for another year. My FH is not handy or into fixing things, so I really don't want to deal with hiring contractors and what not right now, its not what I want to spend my money on yet. If and when we have kids, it will be a different story, but just the two of us, i like apt living.

OMG - totally me! I really want a house - party cause I hate my apartment, partly because I want a dog, partly because I want my own space. Plus it is a good investment.

But then I think to myself, when I get a house that is it. There will really be no shot of moving all around, living around the country, being a free spirit. Of course, these things are unlikely anyway cause DH is rooted so freakin heavily in LI, but I still think about that.....

We do.

We want a house because we want something to call our own, we want to put our hard earned money toward something tangible.

Besides the fact that there is no way we can afford one right now, we also do not want a house. We are not handy at all, and we love to travel.

I am thinking of working for the Foreign Service branch of the State Dept too, so I could be stationed anywhere in the world...that's another thing..

right now we have a rent controlled apt in downtown BK..it's 3 small br's, large LR, DR, kitchen, and MIL Chat Icon

it just seems so dumb sometimes to quadruple our monthly living expenses to own a house that would probably have similar space. Chat Icon

i could have written this word for word!

right now though- we have No need for a house. i don't even have enough time during the week to clean my apartment, nevermind a house that was double the size. we dont have kids- so we don't need extra bedrooms... and honestly, at this point in my life, i'd rather make memories traveling the world with my DH, then redoing a bathroom.

But... i know that will all change in a couple of years when we decide to settle down and have kids. for now though- i really don't see the need for a house.

Re: does anyone else go back and forth between wanting to OWN a home or not?

I did right before we found our house, actually. After looking for as long as we were looking, I just wanted to drain our account and move to Europe. I was done and the side of me that likes to travel very much wanted to be spontaneous and carefree.

I love my house and the work we're doing on it...thankfully we can still travel so I don't regret anything. But sometimes I think about how great it would have been...perfect timing - no kids, no "responsibilities"...

if you are young, newly married, have no kids, enjoy not having a mortgage, worrying about household appliances, landscaping, etc. Enjoy, being a homeowner is stessful, when we were much younger we had a great apartment, came and went as we pleased, and it was carefree.

While I admit that home-ownership is stressful, it is also the most rewarding experience. I love coming home to my own home every day. I love the privacy, I love entertaining, I love decorating. We still travel, eat out, enjoy life.

I think that is so cool to think you could be relocated anywhere. I've worked in other cities but have always been based in NY and love to travel. Even though we own a home, I sometimes miss the thought of being able to move wherever we want, whenever we want. There is a definite sense of accomplishment when you do own your own home and it brings a lot of happiness. Not to mention the investment value, whether it be a house or apartment (especially in the NY market). I can definitely empathize with the back and forth scenario you mentioned.

It's the best investment you will ever make, so I would be hard pressed not to buy a home if I had the money.
