Starter home...

just curious, how many of you bought a starter home with the intention to expand or upgrade to a bigger home later on?

Re: Starter home...

We don't consider our house a "starter" though it seems like many people in our area do- lots of houses are for sale. I guess people figure that it's a good time to upgrade, it's gotten very pricey here.

Anyway, we are thinking about staying 10 years or so. We'd like a little more property and seclusion, we won't be looking for a substantially bigger house. Our current house has three bedrooms and 1.5 baths. We may add on a dining room and upgrade the half bath to a full, if we decide to stay for good.

Re: Starter home...

we did...started with a great townhouse in the neighborhood we wanted. we sold it less than 3 years later and was able to buy a fantastic house about 4 blocks away! Chat Icon We would never have been able to buy this house without the profits from the townhouse.

Re: Starter home...

I love our home. Next year we're thinking of expanding the lanai, and adding a few great features to the house. Hubby is on a 5 yr plan and the way our area is building up would like to sell the house in 5 yrs and move to a more not so built up area and build a bigger home.

But we'll wait and see. I love the house and cant wait to add the new additions Chat Icon

thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to hear Chat Icon
We are trying to decide to either go with the large house and work our azz off paying for it, or go with a more modest (still roomy) home that needs lots of TLC but priced much lower.. both in the same neighborhood that we like.

Re: Starter home...

Re: Starter home...

We definitely have a "starter" home. When we bought it, it was a great price. We've done a lot to improve it and it about 3 years we will sell. Houses in our area have already gone up in value since we moved so we're hoping that we can make a few bucks on the deal.

Re: Starter home...

We do. We live in Islandia. Crappy school district(no kids yet) even if I got prgenant tomorrow we figured we have about 7 yrs to find a new house. We got an AWESOME deal on our house and it is worth about 100k more 2 yrs later. I would highly recommend it!

Re: Starter home...

I don't consider our home a starter home either (4 bedrooms 1.5 baths) we do have something things that we want to do to it as our family grows. We have a bonus room that we will be converting to our formal dining room and the present formal dining room will become the playroom for the kids. We also want to finish the basement. I don't know if we will be in our home forever but we certainly do not have to leave anytime soon. I am content with the school district and school that they are in. If we ever do move it will be for more property.

Re: Starter home...

We are buying a house with 3 bedrooms, so I am not considering it a starter home but I know we would love to expand it on one side to make a FL room.

Re: Starter home...

I am. But then again, things change so frequently in life. We do plan to expand somewhat, and could make a decent profit if we plan to sell. I am the type of person to see what happens. So we will see.

Re: Starter home...

We bought a very small house in a great neighborhood on a good-sized piece of land and when we have children we'll dormer and move the house out in the back a bit. It was the only way we could afford to live where we do.

We are in contract for a 3/BR 2/bath house. We do not consider it a starter home, but I would like to expand it eventually.

Re: Starter home...

We bought a starter home and many times had regrets because of the way the prices sky rocketed. We're relocating now so its kind of a moot point. We are making a nice profit from the 3 yrs we've owned this house but if we were going to stay in NY we'd never be able to buy the house we really want.

I guess my advice would be to start off with a smaller home but one that is definitely big enough if you had to stay in it for a while.

Re: Starter home...

We did. We had it down to 2 choices. A larger home with no yard & no place to expand, or the home we bought, which had only 2 br, no upper or lower level, no DR, but it is on a 100x100+ lot

We did - we bought condo and planned to live in it for 5 years before upgrading. Turns out we were out of there after 3 years to move into a newly constructed house.

Re: Starter home...

We bought a 2bed, 1 bath cottage on a huge piece of property. Its Middle Country School District which is good and the houses in the area are being built up. So, we are the small house on the block. In 2-3 years after we update it. we are going to see what we can sell it for and what we can afford to buy, if it doesnt pay to move then we are expanding it.
