Re: Marriage/Pre-marital Counseling

We did but it was through the minister that married us.

May I suggest a book that is very helpful
"The Hard Questions: 100 Essential Questions to Ask Befoe you say I Do". It is a tiny book broken up into chapters on Family, Children, household, money, sex, etc. There are many questions that you might think of but many others on topics that you think might be insignificant but actually aren't. For example, who will mostly be responsible for grocery shopping, cleaning, car repair etc., How will you handle holidays split between families?

It can also make it easier to bring some of the topics up if the book presents them.

Re: Marriage/Pre-marital Counseling

The pastor who married us held a pre-marital class at our church at the time. They would not marry ANYONE unless they took the course and the course was 12 weeks long, once per week for 2 hours. At first I was annoyed about it, but I was such a GREAT thing to take. I mean they really got into stuff from your past, how you were raised, what you thought about money, kids, etc, etc.

I remember me & my DH (fiancee at the time) having these intense discussions about all the stuff that came up. I am glad we worked out most of that stuff in the pre-marital class.
Good thing, because we have been married for 6 1/2 years and are now expecting our first child. The first 2 years of our marriage were very stressful...DH got sick and lost his job, my parents split, I changed jobs, DH went back to school and my grandparents died. Chat Icon We both believe the only way we got through all of that and stayed together was because of the pre-marital class that we took.
I hope that helps. Chat Icon

The next time you are driving somewhere pull it out.

I'd do a little bit at a time too. If you are truly taking the exedrcise seriously it can be a lot to think about for more than an hour or so.

My DH enjoyed it but we'd stop and take a break after more than a 1/2 hour. Guess it was too much thinking for himChat Icon

Re: Marriage/Pre-marital Counseling

As someone who is married, I say counseling is definately a great thing. Before and after. I have learned a HUGE lesson.

FH and were not married in a church so no Precana no "counseling" and I so regret that. We have not had the easy time of it because there were a lot of issues that were not discussed properly before hand.

So my advice to you is discuss what it is and try to work it out before you walk down the isle and continue working on it after
