Did Gripe Water Make Your Baby Worse? PLEASE HELP

I gave her Gripe Water about 30 mins ago, now she is crying non-stop, even while having the bottle in her mouth. Seems like she is reacting to the Gripe Water.

Did anyones baby react badly to the Gripe Water???

I never gave him gripe water, but is this usually her crying time? If it is then it's not the gripe water. Does she have colic?

Sarah had colic and we didn't try gripe water, white noise was enough. Have you tried it? It's supposed to be very similar to the sound when she was in utero, so it's calming to many babies. TV or radio static, vaccuum, shower running, ceiling fans all are white noise.

We think she may have colic, she's on Similac Alimentum which is for babies w/colic. She's also on Zantac. We're trying to find what work for her.

Never tried it because my ped was VERY against it. If you think she is reacting to it please call your ped immediately.

How old is Katie now? My son had a "witching" two to four hour span every night for three weeks (3-6 weeks old) before I realized he needed white noise to soothe himself. He loved the blow dryer! My friend's son loved the fan over the stove.

I think she is reacting to the gripe water in the sense that its giving her more gas. She cries - screams - bloody murder for about 50-60 seconds and then stops for a few mins, then its back to screaming. The poor baby looks totally exhausted.

I know there is no way I am sleeping tonight.

I tried white noise - even have a white noise machine but nothing works.

I cant take it anymore.

ETA: She is 4 weeks old.

Wouldnt say that the gripe water made jacob worse but nothing really helped him. No matter what i bought, tried, did, didnt do, he still cried and cried. I almost went into hock with the amount of things i spent money on to try to soothe him. Switched formulas 4 times, tried 3 different gripe waters, mylicon, zantac, elevated the crib mattress, switched bottles 3 times, white noise, you name it, I tried it. He just cried and cried and cried... Finally at about 4 months the endless crying stopped. For some babies there is just no answer. If you read the Happiest Baby on the Block it says that those babies are the ones who needed a 4th trimester and were just not ready to be born when they were. And that was my son. It is so hard Kathy, believe me i know how you are feeling, and I honestly would not wish what you are going thru on anyone. I do hope something makes her feel better, lemme know if you need to talk...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My DD also seemed to react badly to it the first time I gave it. After that, she was fine. I'm not really sure if it had much of an effect though. I did just give in and give it again, after 2 hours of screaming and she has finally calmed down. It hasn't really helped her to burp any better, but she has finally fallen asleep.

I'm so sorry. I hope you find the right formula/medication for her little belly. Then you can both get some well needed rest! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm sorry this is happening. I know you must be exhausted too. Chat Icon I guess you have tried laying her on her belly across your legs or facing her outward and holding her belly against your arm to put a little pressure on her belly to break up the gas? you can also rub a warm washcloth on her belly to break up the gas. I know what you are feeling...I felt like I was at my wits end during this time period.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Have you tried to gently move her legs in a bicycling motion? Also, not that it will help her gas, but when my son got really hysterical when he was younger I would loudly say ooooooooooooooKAY over and over. Loudly meaning a notch louder than his crying. That calmed him down each time. Good LuckChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Did Gripe Water Make Your Baby Worse? PLEASE HELP

Thanks girls Chat Icon Chat Icon I've pretty much tried everything in this post except the warm washcloth on her belly.

I'm seriously ready to tell my DH to take tomorrow off so he can stay up with her and I can sleep in the guest room...or the guest room at my father's house (I'm so not kidding).

DH just too her in to her room and put on a Baby Einstein classical music CD, maybe that will help calm her a little.

The bloody-murder-face turning-purple-body-shaking crying has stopped, for now. She is still crying but it's not as hard.

Thank you so much for listening, it really helps. Chat Icon Chat Icon

When we tried gripe water, it didn't really help, Mylicon seemed to work alot better. I'm sorry she was so upset with it - poor mommy, you must be beyond exhausted too.

Re: Did Gripe Water Make Your Baby Worse? PLEASE HELP

DH had her in the bedroom from 11-3am while I slept on the couch. Then I took her on the couch with me from 3am on. I sat up with my legs on the coffee table holding her on my chest and she slept. She woke crying every 15 mins or so in pain at first but then she only woke about every half hour and I was able to soothe her since she was laying right on me.

No more gripe water for us. That's for sure.

I'm taking her to the ped for her 1 mo visit today so I will talk to him more. I dont think there is much left that we can do.
