Kitchen Renovation Question

DH and I just went into contract on a condo. We are so excited, but we need to do a lot of work to it after we close and before we move in. The major renovation is the kitchen. We were planning on doing a lot of the work ourselves/family/friends etc. We were thinking of ordering cabinets etc. from Home Depot or Lowes, but we were wondering how the design process works. Does someone come to your home to take measurements and see it? Or, do you have to do the measurements yourself? I am worried we would mess up the measuring and we would be screwed. Please help and share your experience.
TIA!!

Re: Kitchen Renovation Question

I am fairly sure they come and measure for you.

Re: Kitchen Renovation Question

I can only talk from experience with HD, which is where we ordered our cabinets from. They will come in and measure for $100. You get that money back when you order your cabinets. Before HD, I had already gone to Consumers Kitchen & Bath, who will come in and measure for free. I didnt ultimately care for them for a few reasons so when I went to HD, I already sort of knew how to measure myself and went in to design a kitchen with my own measurements. Once I felt like we were going to order through them, I had them actually come in. Ive been very happy with the whole process - they were much better than Consumers. But my measurements vs. the actual measurements were definitely off so you want them to come measure for you.

Re: Kitchen Renovation Question

The come measure it for you, but be forewarned, they won't tell you the measurements so if you decide to go anywhere other than Lowes or HD, you'll have to do the measurements yourself.

Hubby and I gutted and rehabbed our present kitchen, mostly by ourselves. We actually ended up using Ikea, which ended up costing us almost half of what Home Depot would have charged for almost the exact same cabinets. in all, we spent about $6k on our kitchen, and that included the cabinets, counters, appliances, floor and backsplash tiles. It's something to consider!

We bought our cabinets at Ikea - you can buy almost the exact same cabinets at Home Depot for $10k, or buy them at Ikea for $2.5k - they are white beadboard cabinets, and unfortunately, no company on earth makes them in wood because the paint fades over time, so either way they are thermafoil. The cabinets at Ikea cost $2.5k. We bought butcher block wood countertops for $500. The brand new appliances cost another $1.5k (we bought them all at the sears outlet - a few dings on the side that no one can notice because the appliances are surrounded by cabinets). The tiles cost another $500.

We did all of the installation ourselves so that's how we kept costs down. The installation for the cabinets would have cost at least $3k by a contractor, and the tiles would have cost another $1k-$2k if we used a contractor. And trust me, we are by no means professionals - we've never done this before - but DH is very handy, we bought a lot of books and we took a few seminars at Home Depot.

Here is a pic of the kitchen:
