Pets bought from breeders

When my DH and i were looking to get Martin we knew we were going to look for a good breeder and get him that way.
I was driving around with my friend and her bf said..."you should go to the pound and get one like i did"

I said WHY?

and we just got the sign and Chat Icon

Did anyone else get this?

What a jerk...I think going to a breeder is a personal choice and an informed one.

I sooo wanted to tell him to MIND IF F*CKING BUSINESSChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pets bought from breeders

I think some people have a chip on their shoulder. I have received heat for buying our dogs from breeders but we did what we felt was right at the time. It is important that people make educated decisions and buy from reputable breeders but as long as dogs are treated with love, respect, and kindness, that is what truly matters.

Also, if you are set on a particular breed, age, and sex (and even color), it could be nearly impossible to find your dog at a shelter. I know because my mom has been looking for a while.

I think that whatever works best from you is fine. It is nobody's business as to where we get our pets from and some people try to push off their own thoughts/beliefs onto us.

I honestly knew NOTHING about breeders/shelters/puppystores before I got Molly. What I do know now is that her breeder really took great care of the dogs, they were happy, all very healthy, and they are great puppies. We still keep in contact with her and she still cares about the puppies.

Re: Pets bought from breeders

I think people should get their pets whereever they want.

But just like some people on here are adamant about not buying from pet stores , some people cant understand why anyone would buy from a breeder when theres pets available at the shelters.

Bottom line is its a decision only you can make, and no one should ever judge you for it...thats silly and I wouldnt spend any time on it...If you wanted a certain breed...a min pin like Martin...where would they expect you to go for it? I dont see too many at the shelters....
Did they expect you to just get any old dog at the shelter because they are there? Thats a nice thought, but I see nothing wrong with going to a breeder for the specific dog you want, if there are none to be found for adoption...

I used to volunteer in an animal shelter, so basically I practice I what I preached. But,
it is up to the person to decide to go to a reputable breeder or shelter. I just don't like pet shops!!]

I think that is a wonderful thing when you are able to rescue a dog from a shelter. Unfortunately they don't always have what you are looking for.
We were able to rescue my parents dog but Katie we got from a breeder. Small, young puppies are hard to find in shelters. If you are looking for a large mixed breed then you have a wide selection at shelters.

I don't know what he thought...But i assumed that he felt it only right to get a dog at a shelter....plain and simple.

And i understand that is where he got his...which is great.
But he made me feel like i was an azz for wanting to get mine from a breeder...

And i just don't understand why i should feel bad about that...

Obviously it didn't bother me all that much thoughChat Icon

Re: Pets bought from breeders

I think that if you want a particular type of dog for whatever reason, then you should deal with a reputable breeder. There are a lot of reasons why a person may NOT want a dog from a pound. One of the main reasons being that you don't know how big the dog may get and what mixture it is. Also, buying from a good breeder would help to prevent certain diseases that some dogs may be prone to. That wouldn't happen with a shelter, if the dog is genetically disposed to have something they have no way of knowing that.

That being said, there are also rescues (which is how we got Misty), where you pick a breed you want, contact the rescue and get the type of dog you are looking for.

I think people should do what is right for THEM, besides buying in a pet store that is, and not worry so much about what other's do.

Re: Pets bought from breeders

buying from a reputable breeder is much different than buying from a pet shop.

backyard breeders are another thing.

i get shyt for buying from breeders as well and i think its honestly ridiculous.

i have a love for purebreds----so sue me!

will i ever adopt from a shelter or rescue org? Sure......

but in the meantime, when i want a specific dog i cant go there.

Do you really think i'd find a Dharma in a shelter? I'm sorry, but i wont. And i DID adopt her, it just wasnt from a shelter. i still gave a dog who was up for adoption a new life.... hows that different?

When i got Lukin all i knew was to not buy from a pet shop. I knew i wanted a minpin puppy. and i got him from a remarkable breeder.

then i knew i wanted a White Female Longhaired Chihuahua (although Tinky isnt long haired---- her breeder was a byb who sent mew the wrong dog Chat Icon )
And so, again, not a dog you'd find in a shelter...

reguardless, i eventually want to BE a breeder, so there ya go.

all i have to say to anyone who thinks its wrong to get from a pet shop is this: Chat Icon

p.s. and there is a difference from buying from a reputable breeder and a backyard breeder. but thats another story.

p.s.s. and dont get me wrong, i think adopting is excellent..... if you have no particualr wants in a breed, then you should def adopt. adopting is awesome----- im just saying its not always th eonly optionChat Icon

To be quite honest, I don't think it matters where a pet is bought from, once you are giving it a home. I know buying from a pet store encourages the puppy mills, but I still think those puppies and kittens deserve a home. My first choice though would be to go to a shelter because some town shelters destroy the animals if they don't find homes within a certain time period. It just breaks my heart Chat Icon

Re: Pets bought from breeders

my first dog EVER was a stray and she was the smartest and best dog ever... if given the chance, I would love to adopt another dog from the shelter.

However, it is a VERY personal decision, and nobody should make another feel bad, if they prefer to get one from a breeder.

I have a friend who owns two English bulldogs, had a girl scolded them saying "for every dog you BUY, you kill one that is in a shelter"

To me that is a very PETA way of seeing things and people should really just keep comments like that to themselves.

ETA: I bought my dogs and am glad I did.
