Would you bid on this house?

DH & I went house looking today in Sayville & Bayport we came across this house that really is great--lots of space lots of room & on a huge piece of property. The only downside is that right behind hte property is the railroad tracks so we would hear trains going past alot & there is a house across the street that has a horse. The house though has alot of potential & a beautiful layout & lots of closests. I would do alot to change it but I am just not sure if this is the one although I really like it & it is on a great block in bayport.

TIA

The trains going by would annoy me, though maybe you would get used to it?

We used to live across from the railroad tracks, although it wasn't LIRR. You totally get used to it.

Re: Would you bid on this house?

I would go by the house at different hours to get a better idea of the amount of train noise. Is it the LIRR? What is the traffic like? I don't know much about horses, why would one across the street be bad?

It sounds like you really like it so I would bid on it if I were you. Good Luck.Chat Icon

Don't worry about the trains, you'll get used to it. Think about the people who live near JFK and LaGuardia. If you really love the house, go for it!

If you really love the house, don't worry about it. We are just off the LIE and when we went for the inspection I was very aware of the car noise, needless to say I don't notice it at all anymore.
BTW, my friend's live in Bayport by the tracks, they are on Division and it doesn't bother them.
You won't have a ridiculous amount of trains since you are on the South Shore line and east of Babylon.

my friend lives right next to the lirr... and except when we're out back, we never hear the train. I don't even really notice it then.

Re: Would you bid on this house?

My townhouse was very close further than having it in the backyard but not much) to the Oakdale LIRR,not the station but there was a crossing on the road nearby...the whistle blew everytime the train passed. Honestly I lived there for ten years & it never bothered me...sometimes it would be going really fast I guess & some stuff would shake the tiniest bit. I spent ALOT of time outside in my yard in the summer & never felt annoyed.
So for me if it was a house I loved in every other way, I wouldn't mind. You can probably get creative with plants to buffer sound & create more privacy as well.
Good luck!

ETA-theat LIRR branch has very limited late night trains....I'm sure you can get more info about the schedule from LIRR...and does the house have good windows? That will make a big difference on the interior noise level.

Re: Would you bid on this house?

I could not live that close to the RR. Over the summer while studying for the bar exams I lived near the RR (about 5 blocks) and I found it unbearable at night when the train went bye and I wanted to sleep.

Same here. I'm a pretty light sleeper. I woke up from the train noise the first few nights in our apartment, but after that, the noise hasn't bothered me at all.

The trains don't run that much through there. It is a light line. Don't worry about that. The thing that would bother me is in the summer, would you smell the droppings from the horse on a very hot day?

Re: Would you bid on this house?

NO...not a good selling point if you wanted out...I would worry about my kids playing on the tracks... I would be yelling out the window "GET AWAY FROM THE TRACKS NOW...THATS IT WAIT UNTIL YOUR FATHER COMES HOME"............

Re: Would you bid on this house?

I think it's hard to say. I lived in a basement apt of a house that had train tracks running in front of it. I got used to it, but I was in the basement. My landlords lived there for probably close to 50 years. She got used to it, he said he never did, but their bedroom faced the front of the house, where the tracks were. I would think about which direction the BR windows face.

DH refuses to buy anything along the RR for this very reason......

My co-op was right on the Islip rail line - same line and schedule as Sayville. Most of the time it didn't bother me, but sometimes the place shook if the driver was particulary aggressive.Chat Icon

I did get used to it, but as the tracks are not above-ground they blow the whistle 5 times going through a crossing and that woke me sometimes in the morning at around 5 AM - again, depending on the driver.

If the yard is large at the back and the line is not too close to the house I would probably seriously consider it too. It sounds likea great house - good luckChat Icon

I also wanted to say that you can probably consider bidding low due to the location...I'm sure a good house in that location sells slower than a house without tracks nearby.

personally, no, I wouldn't bid on a house right behind RR tracks, or an expressway or anything like that, but that is just me, plenty of people do.

If I loved everything else about the house I would.

My last apartment was in a house right near LIRR tracks (my window was less the 10ft from the tracks) and after a week or two, I barely noticed them.

Re: Would you bid on this house?

I grew up close to the LIRR, and while it was still about 1/2 a mile from the station, to this day, the sound of a train passing comforts me. I hardly ever noticed it, however at night if I woke up, I would hear it in the distance. Best sound in the world to me.Chat Icon
