Call your town hall and they will explain it. I forget what I was told, but I believe you have to file a new deed. I would have had to bring it to Riverhead and take a day off, so it seemed like too much work right now.

Re: Adding DH's name to title

A deed and transfer documents must be prepared and summited for recording in the County Clerk's Office in the county your property is located in. The transfer forms vary by county.

I would suggest that if you don't know what you're doing, you hire an attorney to prepare it. While it's not hard to prepare a deed, if you don't understand some of the finer points, you could end up messing up your chain of title or the Clerk will reject the document and you will spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to fix it.

If you don't want to walk the deed on yourself, your attorney can have it recorded through a title company s/he works with. The title companies generally have a subcontractor that they pay to submit the deeds in person (or in emergency cases, to walk in on). Deeds (and mortgages etc...) can be mailed to the County Clerk's Office. However, it takes a lot longer for these documents to get on and sometimes they never make it.
