Tattoo Q
It was such a fad to get the chinese symbols as tats
i like how it looks..
but always felt that it was odd that people picked a culture that wasn't theirs...and why?
I like symbolic tats...in fact i love it
I am just wondering WHY one would pick chinese..
and does anyone have any tats that are symbolic that aren't chinese or asian oriented?
and would you find it weird that someone would have a tattoo that say was Hindi writing yet they were obviously not Hindu?

Re: Tattoo Q
Thats why i would never do that bc im not asian (well actually my great grandfather is hence why im spanish w a chinese last name)
but my next tattoo thatwill be added to the flower and vine on my lower back will be a rosary and angel bc of my devotion to god and religion has been getting stronger as years pass. so the symbolism will be my closeness to God

Re: Tattoo Q
Mine is a Japanese symbol but it's of my name which is Japanese. So it may look like a fad, which I agree, a lot do like that, but I have a connection to mine.

It's funny that you say this. I had a conversation with a Chinese co-worker recently and she was telling me that the symbols the majority of non-Asians have tatooed don't really mean what they think. Chinese symbols aren't supposed to have literal meanings. For example, if you wanted the Chinese symbol for beauty, you wouldn't have the character for that word tatooed. You would have all words that symbolize beauty. Do I make sense?

yes makes sense to me
but i guess i am just soooo curious why one would pick a heritage that is not of their own?
was it the fad? was it someting that spoke to them? do they truly like the whole culture?

not sure really....i guess the tattoo artist influenced that decision more than anything...i told him i wanted a symbolic tat that had a certain meaning, and he showed me my options...

Didnt Britney Spears get (or think she got) "mysterious" tatooed on her, and it turned out to mean "strange"?

as opposed to another one? when I got my first tat I was going to get a chinese symbol due to its meaning so I did the next step- I got what the symbol meant in english terms by the objects it stood for. A heart ,star , a moon and a shooting star. I didnt want people asking me what does that mean and after all it is a fad like you said. Just like those tribal bands. Its a matter of taste too I guess. I think Julia Roberts is the one in the early 90's that was pictured with a chinese symbol and then everyone wanted one.

you got a heart, a moon, starr and shooting star...in one tat or all separate? In 1 tat interlocking one another in a straight line and the shooting star is underneath, it is the size of 30 cents- a quater and a nickel side by side.

There was a show that was on for like one season. It had that guy who was on the show w/Erkel. He had a tattoo and a Chinese guy told him it meant "in a relationship w/ a man you the woman"
