Re: Teachers TTC

Are you tenured?
I would suggest talking to your union representative to see what your options are.

Re: Teachers TTC

I was told 6 weeks for a vaginal birth and 8 weeks for a c-section. After that, if you do not have tenure, you must come back or there are no guarantees.

Re: Teachers TTC

We get 6 weeks paid and 6 weeks unpaid. I do not work in the public school system on either LI or NYC.

Re: Teachers TTC

NYC DOE does not have ANY paid leave. You can use any of your accumulated days towards maternity leave and then you go out on disability.

Now, depending on the relationship you have with your administration, some will let you take as much leave as you want. Others will stick to the 6-8 week rule and require that you be back at work.

It is ridiculous that a profession with so many women does not have paid maternity leave!

In my district if you are untenured you can use your sick days for 6/ 8 weeks if you have enough, to be paid and you can take your 12 weeks of FMLA but that is it. You are not eligible for 1 or 2 year leave. You must return after the 12 weeks and your tenure date is pushed back based on how many weeks you missed.

I would hope that the union would intervene on behalf of a teacher who was told that she had to come back to work after 8 weeks. My understanding is that you are entitled to additional time under FMLA and if you're tenured your admin can't tell you to be back in 8 weeks. If you're not tenured, then unfortunately they can do what they want.

Many districts don't want to mess with untenured teachers and pregnancy. If a person is denied tenure or not asked back it can be looked at that it was due to a pregnancy and it is discrimination. You are entitled to whatever the FMLA states.

I am due August 22nd. I just finished my 2nd year teaching in the city. I plan on taking the 12 weeks I am entitled to under FMLA. Tenured or not, you are entitled to it. I am only getting paid for sick days I accumulated.

Re: Teachers TTC

I am going into my 2nd year NOT tenured yet and finishing grad school in June. I was hoping to be preggers and have the baby in July but do you think that would be enough time off to start back up next Sept?
