Yom Kippur Question for my Jewish girls
If you are not fasitng on Yom Kippur for medical reasons, do you still take a day off out of respect or do you just go to work?

even though the person can't fast for medical reason, i would take off to observe the holiday

Thanks, that is also how I feel! It is just not the day to ignore comletely even if I will not be fasting... Just wanted to hear it from someone else!

I have fasted before. I'm on certain meds right now and docs don't want me fasting.
I may go to services though.

If I wasn't fasting, I would still be spending my day in synagogue, so I would certainly take off. Even if you don't attend services, I think it is still a day for reflection and atonement.

I agree. I won't be attending services this year (so weird to me!). I will not drive on Yom Kippur and the local temple is much to far to walk.

I agree. The last 2 years I didn't fast (was pregnant last year and nwo I am nursing), btu I still go to temple and observe the best I can.

I agree. I usually try to observe with FH, but this year I actually have a show and HAVE to work. But even if you are not fasting, or even if you're not going to services, it's still a day for reflection, which is not accomplished by going to work. Fasting is just one aspect

Funny that you say that because I just recently looked this up.
I fast. But I would still take off even if I wasnt. Because I was hopeful to be PG now, I looked up rules on whether or not pregnant and/or nursing women were supposed to fast on YK not:
"What are the laws of fasting for a woman who has recently given birth?
For the first 72 hours following the birth, she is forbidden to fast. Even if both she and the doctor agree that she is strong enough to fast, she must eat.
If she says that she does not need to eat, she should eat only small quantities. If during the fast she feels that she needs to eat normally, she may do so.
If she is unsure whether she needs to eat, and certainly if she feels the need to eat, she should eat normal quantities.
What are the rules after 72 hours since the birth?
Between three and seven full days (i.e. from 72 to 168 hours) following the birth, the law is slightly stricter. In every case that she is permitted to eat, she may eat only small quantities, unless there are complications.
If she says that she needs to eat, she may do so even if a doctor says the opposite.
After seven full days she must fast like everyone else unless there is some complication.
Is a pregnant woman required to fast?
A pregnant woman must fast like everyone else. It is strongly recommended that she rest as much as possible in order to preserve her strength, even if this means davening little or nothing in shul. Wherever possible, conditions in the home should be arranged to ease fasting, e.g. using fans or air conditioning. The husband should be prepared to help at home during the day to enable his wife to fast. If a doctor fears that fasting may cause a miscarriage (G-d forbid), she may eat or drink small quantities. A doctor (preferably G-d fearing) and a rabbi must be consulted.
Is a nursing mother allowed to drink if she fears a lack of milk for her baby?
In almost all cases this is unnecessary, especially today when baby formula is available that can be used as a substitute for a short period. It is advisable to accustom the baby to formula a few days beforehand to avoid complications arising on Yom Kippur. In extremely unusual circumstances when a sensitive baby cannot tolerate anything other than the mother's milk, it may be possible to allow the mother to drink small quantities. Such serious matters should be determined only after consultation with a rabbi. "
I am not pregnant but I was bummed that I wouldnt be able to get out of this! I guess people do what they can tolerate!

Leslie, that's very interesting. I was talking to an orthodox friend a couple of days ago and she told me the same thing. My own personal belief is that, when I am pregnant, it will be more important for me to be at shul than to fast.

I'm really surprised that it says a pregnant woman would still fast. Not like I would have a feast or anything, but I'd eat a little throughout the day.
That's what I'm planning on doing anyway. I'm on some meds that I really need to eat on and like an idiot, I fasted last year anyway - big mistake- got pretty sick.
So I'll eat a little bit during the day.

I used to always take the day and go hang out with my mom- who is a teacher and always had off.
DH never takes off-- but ALWAYS treks out to LI to attend a family function-- so I usually go to work and then attempt to do the family thing.
This year I am actually having a medical procedure at the end of the week-- that actually will require fasting-- I'll just atone for my sins 5 days later.

Apparently not. Though that was what I thought too. Check this out:

I think I was absent that day in Hebrew School. Actually, I work in a pretty religious neighborhood in Bklyn and we do have a few students and staff members who do not come in and/or fast on other days.

I have a bunch of orthodox friends, and they're always fasting on days that I have no idea about. I knew about Yom Kippur, Tisha B'Av and the Fast of Esther, but there are so many minor fast days.

Not to start an argument about jewish laws, but I think people having to fast while pregnant and nursing is really ridiculous and unsafe.
I'm sure one day of not eating won't case permanent damage, but what if it does? I feel that pregnancy is enough of an impairment as to excuse you from fasting. JMO

I agree! Thats a little odd! I would never starve my baby. I imagine if I didnt eat for 24 hrs the baby would be kicking beyond belief!

I am not jewish -- and I don't know much about the jewish laws so I apologize if I offend anyone...
But when I was 17 weeks pregnant I passed out in BRU while doing some shopping. I hadn't eaten in about 5 hours and they said that could have been one of the reasons, why I passed out, although they never said for sure.
Personally I could never fast if I were pregnant or breastfeeding. I'd be too worried that I'd risk doing something to the baby. Maybe I just don't understand it since it is nt my religion, but it is just my POV.

Interesting about the fasting/pregnancy rules. I have known people who normally fast, but did not fast when pregnant.
As for whether to take off from work, I usually don't fast, but I do reflect and atone. I take off from work.
My husband has juvenile diabetes and his doctor has never allowed him to fast. He goes to shul, so he takes the day off.
