Baby nurse - can anyone help? 1st week home

Hi there -

My daughter is 6 days old now and I'm overwhelmed. I love her sooooooo much and we're living with my mother - however, she was out of work and I thought she'd be able to help out a lot - however, due to financial difficulties she had to start a new job the day I got out of the hospital - she's a wreck b/c she wants to be home and I don't dare tell her I want her here b/c she's already upset. Dad is helping out but he has to go back to work soon.

Anyone recommend a baby nurse or doula - and do you think we should have him/her at nighttime or during the day?

I'm just overwhelmed - emotional - no one tells you how difficult and intense it is in the beginning. I found myself crying thinking I can't do this and was projecting into the future like when she's 2 or 3 years old. Tell my mind to stop!

Thank you guys for your support!!!!!

Where are you located?
You can opt for a post partum doula if you want (they'll even help you with the laundry...). My mom isn't certified but has been doing it for years for a family of 4.

This is VERY normal. Is your husband home to help a bit? These women can probably help you a lot.

I did want to add that it is okay to be overwhelmed..not just on day 6 but on day 66 and day 600+.
Loving our children does not mean that it is always easy to handle to challenges we are faced with or like in my case, I had PPD.
Hugs to you!!!!

It is sooo hard in the beginning. I remember asking my doctor if anyone ever dropped dead purely of exhaustion from having a newborn. This is as bad as it gets in my opinion. Older babies have their own tough challenges, but nothing was as bad as the shock of those first few weeks.

I don't have recommendations for baby nurses or doulas since I'm out of state now, but I'm sure your hospital, ob/gyn or pediatrician would have some names.

yes- that's what I feel like - like "how am I going to make it through this - can I really do this - am I going to be a good mom - can I do this for the rest of my life?"

man - no one really talks about this stuff when you are preggo!

That's because we don't want to scare you. We moms need to ease each other into this. If anyone knew how truly raw & emotional motherhood would leave you, there would be a lot less of us.Chat Icon

We all feel that way...even the ones that seemingly have their act together. You've just brought home a little person without an instruction manual. It's a tough adjustment all around, but it does get better...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think a million people can tell you how hard it is having a baby, but until you have one of your own, you can never really know!

And people think pregnancy is hard....

Keep your pecker up! It will get better!!!
I made it to 16 weeks this week and I never thought we would get here!

Re: Baby nurse - can anyone help? 1st week home

I saw your post and could not help but relate--I think we all can. I gave birth on March 11 and I swear I thought I could not do this the first week--between crying for no apparent reason and trying to breast feed--I thought I was a terrible mom and that it would never get better. My son is now 7 weeks and I feel sooo much better and it does get better.

Hang in there--it is tough, but it WILL get better.Chat Icon
