Carpet for Basement

We need to get our basement carpeted soon. Can anyone recommend a place that does a good job and is reasonably priced?

Montauk Carpet but I would rethink the carpet idea. Basements usually get alot of moisture and for some reason you have some sort of water damage it takes a long time to dry even with the dryers the insurance companies send out and if it doesnt dry completely through you will develope mold. When my mom moved into her house after she had the basement refinished (their was carpeting throughout downstairs) the toilet tank just kept running all day. It was fine in the morning before I went to work (my room was downstgairs) and by the time I got home their were about 4 inches of water throughout the entire space and we are talking about amost 1000 sq. ft and 4 rooms. It took a long time to dry and even after we had them cleaned it was never the same and it always seemed to smell to me. After that experience I wouldn't do it. My dad put tile in his house and good thing he did because he didnt know that when it rains hard the drain in the back of the house backs up into one of the rooms. Since you are moving into the house soon then I would wait and see what the fall brings as far as weather and see how it holds up before putting carpets down. Again this is just my opinion.

Re: Carpet for Basement

I would definately rethink carpet in the basement. We moved into a house that had a brand new finished basement, and since the beginning of the Spring we've had so many water problems in the basement (which are now fixed), but we have to replace the carpet because of how it just got continously wet.

Re: Carpet for Basement

Thanks for the feedback. It seems that our basement is pretty dry, and has no flooding issues. But again, I haven't lived there yet. So maybe we should hold off....Thanks!

my parents had some water damage several yrs ago and got $ to replace stuff from their homeowners insurance.

they replaced their carpet at Home Depot. they did a good job and were pretty reasonable.

ETA: not sure if you watch Candice on Divine Design... she always uses a faux wood flooring (vinyl) which she claims is the best thing to use in a basement. it looks SO much better than carpeting and won't ruin if it gets wet.

We were under the impression there were no water issues in our basement either. We moved into the house in August of last year and our first problem with water was in December... then nothing until May, we finally found the problem and had it fixed (was NOT cheap either).

Since we have a tremendous finished basement, we don't want to replace the entire carpet, so the area (where we have our TV and couches) I want to put faux wood floors there instead.

I would also recommend that if you are intent on getting carpet, as about a vapor barrier (especially since besements get moisture regardless) between the floor and the carpet.

A friend of mine did their basement through Empire. They will come install the carpet within 24 hours of your meeting w/ them. Just bargain w/ them on price, my friend got them to lower their quote by a couple hundred dollars and it looks great.
