Did anyone decline downs syndrome testing?

I went to my first appt yesterday! and everything looks greatChat Icon . My bleeding has finally stopped and i go for a sono next week to make sure the bleed has resolved itself. My due date is March 21Chat Icon . When filling out all of the paper work for the testing they went over the testing for downs and i asked if they get alot of false positives and she said yes. but then they would do an amnio and then explained the risks of that to me. She then said we would have a choice to terminate or proceed with the pregnancy . I and Fh both decided not to have the test i dont want to worry about a positive when its really a negative and god forbid our baby was born with downs i would not love it any less or aboard it....did anybody else feel the same way?

We did not do the test either...it had way too many false positives and we just decided that the best thing for us was not to take it. Congratulations!! I wish you a happy and healthy 9 monthsChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone decline downs syndrome testing?

We did the sono and finger prick @ 12 weeks but declined the AFP @ 16 weeks because of the high false positive rate

We did the AFP and luckily it came back with a very low risk, but I have a friend whose came back with a high risk and she was a wreck for 2 weeks before her sono appt to check for the "markers." I can definately understand the decision to not take the test.

We did the Level II sonogram but I wouldn't do an amnio even if they wanted me to. (which luckilly everything looked fine anyway)

Re: Did anyone decline downs syndrome testing?

I did both and they did find markers and the AFP came back normal. We decided to go for the amnio and I am getting it done today at noon. I cant wait four months to know if our baby has downs I need to prepare for that if it is true. JMO

Re: Did anyone decline downs syndrome testing?

I was just as worried. I didn't want to take the tests either. According to my Doctor, It was part of the Pre-Natal care they give. I was so upset. I knew that an amnio was out of the question, so the results would only have me worry for the next few months. BUT I did take the tests and everything came out fine. Declining wasn't an option for me. I would have though!

Re: Did anyone decline downs syndrome testing?

DH and I are still in the discussion stage as to what to do regarding the downs testing, but I am learning towards not having it done personally

Re: Did anyone decline downs syndrome testing?

I opted to have all the testing done, well not the amnio because it wasn't necessary.. We had the ultras screen in the first trimester then the AFP for spina bifida at 16 weeks.
Luckily everything came back normal and our level II looked good.

For me personally it was more to ease my mind because I would have spent my entire pregnancy worrying. Also DH and I have strong opinions on quality of life and there are certain things where we would in fact more than likely choose to terminiate.

That said if you know there is no way you would do anything with the information then don't do the testing. That's what I was told.

Re: Did anyone decline downs syndrome testing?

We declined the testing... I know too many people who have gotten false positives (MIL included) and I wasnt going to put myself through that...

My DR said usually that could see something like that at the 20 weeks sono...and everything was fine...

I thought it would worry me the whole pregnancy...(because I didnt get the testing done) and I havent even thought about it...
