Re: do you give your animals vitamins?

I think if you are feeding a premium food, it isnt necessary.

But some vitamins I have heard of are:

brewers yeast (naturally repels fleas)
primrose oil (for itchy dogs)
there is one more... for the joints, I cant think of it right now

Re: do you give your animals vitamins?

Yes...the vet wasn't sure if it was necessary but he said it couldn't hurt so I figured why not if it might benefit them?

Also, I'm a big believer in the teeth brushing...but it's hard because Casey keeps trying to gulp down the toothpaste! Chat Icon

When we adopted Max they told us he needed a multi & calcium, so for a while they all got it. We stopped the calcuim eventually because it was so expensive since it was so many tablets/day.

Anyway, they get PetTabs and we order in large quantities online.

Re: do you give your animals vitamins?

I was giving Bruno Pet Tabs until he was 6 months old. I have him on a mix of Wellness puppy food & Blue Buffalo fish & rice food (Adult) since he is ready to change & likes the little crunchy bits that the Blue Buffalo has. Pyxie was getting Missing Link added to her food, but it has not improved her skin or hair the way it is supposed to, so I just give her egg white and poached salmon every once & a while for that instead.

When I first got her (8weeks) the Vet had me giving her Nutra Cal.
After a few months, he told me I did not have to use vitamins anymore as long as she eats normal.

Now I just keep the Nutra Cal on hand to use for when I have to give her a pill. It is a gel in a tooth paste like package and she LOVES it!

ETA: I think they wanted us to give Max the multi because he was underweight and it just added to his daily nutrients. And the calcium was because he was older ...

No. The vet said that because she is on a quality dog food that she does not need vitamins.

i heard that glucosamine is great for dogs who are prone to having hip and joint problems and that fish oil pills help to promote a shiny coat.

We've done it all and nothing ever showed a noticable improvement.

DH even ordered something that testamonials were amazing on their dogs (related to arthritis/hip/etc) and kept saying in a few weeks Max would be flying!!! But we went thru two bottles of the stuff and he didn't seem to be any different! Chat Icon

I dont, but feed them Nutro Max. They've been doing fine with just that.

That's what Molly gets.

We joke because my Dad is also on it for joint relief.

They take their glucosamine (of course, hers is formulated for dogs) together every morning.

Peanut loves it too!! It's got molases or something in it so it's really sweet. A few times Peanut has been put on liquid pain killers (bad knee and she pulled a muscle in her neck once). I always ask if they can add a dab of molases so she'll take it.

When we first got our dog, we were giving her a powder supplement as per the breeder, but when we went to the vet, he chuckled and told us that if it made us feel better, then we could continue with the supplement, but otherwise we were wasting our time & money...that her dog food was suffecient enough.

Needless to say, we discontinued the supplements.
