Do you think drinking coffee with a straw really helps prevent staining?

Had bonding done recently to close a space in my teeth and bondings can't be whitened; I'd had BriteSmile done before my wedding so they are nice and white...(shoulda had the space closed before the wedding, too!)

Anyway, I cannot give up my coffee but I want to keep the bonding from staining so I use a straw...and then brush my teeth right after. Anyone else do this or obsessed w/white teeth? LOL...

PS: Whitestrips and stuff don't whiten bondings; they don't harm it...but they also don't whiten it

I am not sure....what about the teeth in the back? Coffee might hit it a little....my coworker that whitened his teeth switched to caffiene pillsChat Icon

I drink all coffee through a straw - it's one of my "things". I do think it will still stain - as I just got back from having the Invisalign put it and I asked the same question!! The dental nurse looked at me like I was insane when I told her I drank my hot coffee through a straw Chat Icon .

I hear you...it took me some time to get used to it. A few other girls here do the same; we look pretty funny in meetings. They don't have bondings, though...their weddings are coming up and both got whitened.

I don't think you should drink hot coffee from a straw. When that email about not freezing water bottles was going around, I found an article that said cold temperatures don't affect the plastic, but hot temperatures can. There was something about the hot temperatures could possibly be releasing chemicals from the plastic. They mentioned drinking hot coffee from a plastic straw as an example of what you shouldn't do.

When I had braces as an adult, I was concerned about staining and the orthodontist told me not to worry about the coffee, as long as I brushed right after drinking it. Not sure how it would affect bonding though.

My dentist comes into the room drinking coffee and says, "You gotta live." BUT...he can spruce his up any old time!

Bondings can be redone; but I am years off from needing that so I just want to keep them white. He told me he can polish them, but that's about it. So you they do stain??? Crap. I gotta have one cup a day!

Lana - here it is, I got it from the internet, so who knows, but it seems legit
============================

OC&PA: What about cooking with plastics?

RH: In general, whenever you heat something you increase the likelihood of pulling chemicals out. Chemicals can be released from plastic packaging materials like the kinds used in some microwave meals. Some drinking straws say on the label “not for hot beverages.” Most people think the warning is because someone might be burned. If you put that straw into a boiling cup of hot coffee, you basically have a hot water extraction going on, where the chemicals in the straw are being extracted into your nice cup of coffee. We use the same process in the lab to extract chemicals from materials we want to analyze.

If you are cooking with plastics or using plastic utensils, the best thing to do is to follow the directions and only use plastics that are specifically meant for cooking. Inert containers are best, for example heat-resistant glass, ceramics and good old stainless steel.

I drink hot coffee out of a straw too! Not because of whitening, but because I dont like how my lipstick gets all over the cup and looks gross at meetings!

I've had bonding on my two front teeth for 14 years and drink so much coffee...never had a problem with staining...and used the whitestrips...and they worked.

Re: Do you think drinking coffee with a straw really helps prevent staining?

Answer I found online from a dentist! This is pretty good info, since I mainly care about my new front teeth...but I should probably stop the straw bit

Question: Does using a straw w/tea or coffee help prevent staining?

I'm going to say no. The tea/coffee will have to come into contact with some of your teeth as you sip and swallow. That is unless you have the straw stuck directly down your throat which is not recommended or safe. It might, however, reduce the amount of liquid that comes into contact with your teeth or lessen the chances of your visible (front teeth) becoming stained

Really? They worked? My dentist swore to me up and down that my other teeth would lighten more and the 2 front would remain, which would be odd. Perhaps it removes surface stains...

Yeah, they worked. I'm sure what the whitestips do is no where's near the change that you find in doing a Britesmile, but it lightened them all the same.
Everytime I go the dentist I have to tell them I had bonding done on the front four teeth. They're truly amazed at how it's held up after all these years. (I always told my Mom...that was the BEST $200 she ever spent on me.)Chat Icon
