Folic Acid Question

When I met with my gyno in NYC (highly respected NYU gyno), she told me that all I have to take is a multi-vitamin and there is no need for a so-called "pre-natal". She said everything I need (including folic acid) will be covered in the multi-vitamin. Well, I keep reading that 1000mg (I think it's mg) of Folic Acid is the recommended dose per day. My multi-vitamin has 800 mg. The multi-vitamin I am taking is 'one of the best' (or so I'm told).

What do you think about this?

Re: Folic Acid Question

That should be fine. From what I understand, the recommended dose is 400, and for those TTC or pregnant 800. Some multivitamins only have 400, but if yours has 800, I think you're covered.

Hm, so what does it mean that I just looked at my prenatal and it said it had 1 mg of folic acid?

My boss who is also a prenatal yoga instructor swears that you don't need a prenatal at all. I ignore her though.

Ok, I just looked this up. My multi-vitamin has 800 MCG, not MG....you are doing great with 1 MG:

The recommended daily intake of folic acid for all women of childbearing age is at least 400 micrograms (mcg), or 0.4 milligrams (mg). During pregnancy, the recommended dose jumps up to 600 - 800 mcg, or 0.6 - 0.8 mg, a day. If you have a family history of neural-tube defects, you should probably get 4,000 mcg (or 4 mg) of folic acid a day. Most prenatal vitamins contain the appropriate dosage of folic acid along with other vitamins that will help you stay healthy.

Women who have had their first child with a neural tube defect have a higher risk of having a second with the same defect. Healthcare providers now advise these women to take at least 4 milligrams (mg) starting one month before conception, if possible, and continuing through the first three months of pregnancy.

Talk to your doctor about how much you need before and after you conceive. Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin, so your body will flush out the excess if you consume too much. For some women, there's an exception to this rule: Getting too much folate may hide a B-12 deficiency, sometimes a problem for vegetarians. Ask your doctor or midwife if you think you may be at risk.

Re: Folic Acid Question

When I was pregnant with my first child, I ran out of my pre-natals before I could get another prescription. I called my ob/gyn and she refilled it, but at my next visit she said I could take a multi-vitamin like Centrum should it happen again.

I am just taking a regular multi also. Same advice from my OB-GYN and my primary care doctor. I take more folic acid since I do have problems in my family, but you can buy that separately.

Re: Folic Acid Question

as far as i know, 800 mcg is the recommended daily allowance of folic acid for a pregnant woman, 400 mcg if you're not pregnant. 1 mg is more than what you need. keep in mind that the vitamin is also a supplement - presumably you're getting some folate in your diet already. so 800 mcg is way more than enough in a vitamin.

I agree. If you read a women's multi and a "prenatal" vitamin label, you will see that the main diff. is more folic acid...but you should be getting some from food not just a pill. also, prenatals seem to have little calcium. rather scary! the regular women's multi has MORE!

I used to not believe they were the same and faithfully filled my prescript for pretnatals until my mom [a nurse] told me the store ones were the same...so I took my prescript ones with me and compared labels. EXACTLY the same stuff! wild.

Sure why not? They aren't going to hurt you. Target has them for like $6.99. It's just a vitamin.

Re: Folic Acid Question

The recommended dosage is 400.

When I went to see my former Dr. he gave me a prescription for 1000 but that was too expensive so I take 800 per day. He said I did not need the prenatal.

I have now a new doctor and told her about the previous conversation with the other doctor and what I was doing.

She said 800 per day was fine. It was my choice about the prenatal. I am going to start the prenatal now.
