HSG Questions

So I have an HSG scheduled tomorrow at 10:00 am.

I did a search on HSG on these boards and it seems like such differing experiences. From truly terrible and painful to no big deal, just a little cramping.

What do you think the difference is and what do you think one can do to make it less painful.

I know Donna (dooodles) said she took a Motrin 30 minutes prior. What did the rest of you do and what was your experience?

TIA!! Chat Icon

Re: HSG Questions

I took tylenol 30 minutes before my appointment...I had very mild cramping when it was over and no bleeding. Good luck Lauren!

ETA: I also was on antibiotics that the Dr. prescribed to prevent infection.

Re: HSG Questions

I was on antibiotics to prevent infection because that's a big negative to the exam.

I also took 3 advils 2 hours prior and then 3 more advil 1 hour prior. I had mild AF cramping that lasted less than a minute during the xray.

No cramping after, just a lot of leaky fluid...

I forgot about that - I have antibiotics too. three days worth.

Leaky fluid? Can I go back into work after?

Re: HSG Questions

I didn't have too much leaky fluid. I used the pad they gave me and then I put on an overnight pad after that. It was suggested to use that to help protect my clothes. I also stayed on the table for about 10 minutes after the procedure.

Re: HSG Questions

My experience was like Kim's, Michelle's and Donna's, it wasn't painful, I was on antibiotics and took advil in 1/2 hour intervals 2 hours before the test.

Good luck!!

Re: HSG Questions

Good luck Lauren!!

Mine was so painful due to my cervical issues, I have had two major cervical surgeries.

I did have a lot of fluid leakign afterwards, nothing painful there, just gross. I bled as well for about 1 day. Used a pad the entire first and next day.

I truly hope your experience is pain free. It does seem that those of us who had pain are in the minority, so Im hopeful you will be fine!

Re: HSG Questions

Just a suggestion - bring your own pantyliner to use after the procedure. The ones they have there (at least in my facility) are archaic, I couldn't even figure out how to use it.

Re: HSG Questions

I never responded to this earlier, and I know its too late now, but I watned to add my opinion for future readers

My HSG was so painless I thought I was in the clear. I took 3 motrin before and brought my own pad. I took more motrin afterwards.

I ended up having two blocked tubes, one that was subsequently removed and the other was opened surgically.

I had my HSG done at Great Neck Radiology, and the experience there was fine too.
My apt was 8.30, they took me in at 8.45 and I was done by 9.00
