In my elevator at work

there is a tv screen kinda thing that gives you the news, weather, etc.

Something I saw on there today really shocked me.

It said that 40% of Americans are obese. I ont mean a little bit overweight, but close to 200 lbs more than what they should weigh.

Why do you think this is?

My theory: People overeat during regular meals, and eat alot of crap, and dont excercise.

I could stand to lose 15 lbs myself, but I don't stuff myself, and I try and get some excercise and stay away from junk food.

That percentage sounds high -- 40% of Americans obese, yes, but 40% of America does not appear to be 200# overweight. That seems to be an exaggeration imo.

I think it can be attributed to lots of reasons....overeating & lack of exercise as mentioned, plus genetics, convenience foods, fad diets, the crap that is put in food (transfat, artificial sweetners, etc.), lack of information.

Re: In my elevator at work

i would say it would be the foods that they eat. fried foods has a lot to do with it. it all has to do with portion control

I think the weight (or BMI or whatever they use to measure) lower nowadays to call someone obese than it was 20 years ago, so they can say more people are obese and get more funding from the govt.

I think most people can take better care of themselves, but i dont think we are fatter as a nation than we were in 1986.

I also think that it has to do with the portions that Americans eat. If you travel to other countries, their portions are not nearly as big as ours.

Re: In my elevator at work

according to BMI- my husband who is solid muscle - except for a tiny belly- is obese- it's so silly- we actually get penalized for it with life insurance-

so I don't buy it-

Re: In my elevator at work

did they specifically say 200lbs??? I thought the definition of "obese" was more like 40-60 pounds over what one should weigh?

it is sickening the amount of food they bring out! it's SO wasteful. first you get a salad, then soup, then enough meat/chicken/fish to feed a family of 4 with potatoes and a vegetable. and then you get dessert Chat Icon

Hmmm that percentage seems too high. Shouldnt height be factored in?

By the way the little TV screen is called Captivate Network. I am sure you can sleep at night now that you know.

+32% body fat for women, +25% for men is technically considered obese.

I remember from health class that if you are more than 10% over your ideal weight, then you are considered obese. So if that is the criteria, I can see 40% of Americans being obese.

Also, if they count kids that would make the % higher- I've seen a lot of articles lately about kids and obesity, and in my middle school there are a lot of seriously overweight kids- many more than when I was in school. Many of them eat terrible diets and they only get gym once a week.

My daughter just started kindergarten....and they really stress this topic... bringing in healthy snacks, alternatives for bday parties... all because of childhood obesity.
