Insurance question, I'm sure it's been asked before
Do you have to call your ins co. ahead of time and let them know you have a new customer brewing or do you wait til after the baby is born? Also if you have to take the baby to the doctor before you get a new card how does that work? Do you pay up front and get reimbursed?

I was told that I do not have to call the insurance company. They will automatically add the baby once he/she is born.
As for the card: my company is just one card with the names of the participants (me and dh). The dr's office should just take your card and your info and you pay the co-pay. The baby will be covered even though his/her name is not on the card yet.

I had to fill out the forms to add the baby on, and once the baby is born I just have to call my employer and she will fax over the paperwork and add her on as of that day. I don't know about the card

I would think they know a new customer is coming from getting billed for all your prenatal visits! My doc filed paperwork with my ins co so that they knew a hospital stay was coming for the birth.
After the baby was born, we had to fill out paperwork to get the kids added. Since the insurance is through my DH's company, he gave the paperwork to his HR manager and they took care of things from there.
We had a few pedi appts before they were added to the insurance, and the pedi's office just takes a copy of your ins card so they can file.
I have Empire this time around and its a HUGE hassle. They know Lauren was born, yet they are rejecting all her hospital claims! How in the world could I have added her to the policy BEFORE she was born. they are nincompoops! We did file the paperwork, but I guess it just takes time.
