Long Island Teachers Health Insurance While on Maternity Leave
I am pregnant and teach in Long Island. Does anyone know what the protocol is for the health insurance while you are out? I carry it for myself but not my husband and want to know how long am I covered under my insurance. Is it 12 weeks (FMLA) or only the amount of time I have saved? I am so confused and everyone tells me something different. TIA

I'm not a teacher but I was out on the FMLA act. What my company di was while I was out I had to pay my part of the insurance myself.

Re: Long Island Teachers Health Insurance While on Maternity Leave
I'm a teacher and took FMLA after my maternity ran out. My DH works for the same district so we have the same insurance and when we got married I opted out of mine and onto his for the family plan. My insurance never ran out b/c he's still working. A friend of mine who also teaches in our school went on maternity a month after me and took FMLA too after her maternity ran out. They told her that her insurance will be kept throughout her FMLA and will terminate if she doesn't come back after her FMLA is up. She has to go back to school for the last week (next week) of school in order to keep her insurance throughout the summer. I was lucky to be able to take the rest of the year and return in Sept. b/c my DH carries our insurance.
Did this help?

Re: Long Island Teachers Health Insurance While on Maternity Leave
I took FMLA. I work on Long Island as a teacher. I had to pay during my FMLA what I would normally pay out of my paycheck. I believe it came out to be like $200 and change a month. After the 12 weeks, I had to pay what the district paid which was about $1100 a month.

Re: Long Island Teachers Health Insurance While on Maternity Leave
I didn't go on maternity leave but went "out sick" and used my sick time from March until the end of the year. This did not have any impact on my insurance. I was advised by a few union people not to go on "maternity leave" since it does affect your insurance.
