i changed from iams to nutra max recently and was reading the bag in re: intake and weight. for my dog's weight (100 lbs) they advise 4 cups per day. i never really paid attention to how much i feed him but do feed him 2-3x per day. i use the container that you get at casinos to scoop his food out. out of curiosity i measured the container the other day and it is 4 cups Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon. which means i have been feeding him 8-12 cups of food a day. no wonder why the vet advised that he should lose a few pounds.

Re: OMG

We NEVER follow the dog food directions.

Usually you have to figure out what works best for your dog. If they seem to be getting "pudgy", cut back on the food.

My one dog is 90+lbs and he gets 3 cups a day (1.5 in the morning and 1.5 in the evening.) He's also high energy, so 3 cups for him works, whereas with another 90lb dog, it may pack on the weight.

My 58 lb dog gets 2 cups a day (1 in the morning and 1 in the evening.) Again...she's fairly active as well.

And they both get "diet treats"...Iams Weight Control (they're small biscuits.) I found that the larger biscuits really put the pounds on the dogs, even if it was just one a day.

We get nothing but compliments on how "fit" our dogs are (since most labs tend to be overweight.)

suprisingly he really isn't overweight (at least i don't think so). he weighs 100lbs and the vet wants him down to 95. he is a an american lab and is on the taller side. he does exercise about 2 hours a day so he needs energy. i do agree though that 8-12 cups is a little much. Is he a field lab?

My big man is a field lab (tall w/a different coat + high energy), whereas my little girl is a bench/show lab (stockier, like a traditional lab.)

not really sure. he is tall w/ somewhat of a heavier coat. he has a good deal of energy for 6 yr old. i don't have a pic on my computer but he looks almost identical to this dog.
