Renu Moisture Loc contact lens solution has been causing severe fungal infections. In some cases, people have had to have the infected eye removed. Chat Icon

I hadn;t heard either, and my entire family uses it. Here are the details:

Bausch extends lens solution recall worldwide

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Bausch & Lomb Inc. (BOL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday permanently recalled its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution in all global markets, saying the product may increase the risk of a potentially blinding eye infection.

Expanding an earlier recall, Bausch said some aspect of the MoistureLoc formula may be increasing the relative risk of the eye infection in unusual circumstances.

The global recall marks a shift in the search for a cause of an outbreak of Fusarium keratitis that has infected 122 people in the United States alone.

Chief Executive Ronald Zarrella, in a conference call with investors, said the infections were likely caused by a "perfect storm" of factors.

He said the product had the potential to form a thin film on the tip of the bottle and in the lens case that could encourage the growth of the fungus, which is commonly present in bathroom sinks and drains.

"Because our other products are based on an entirely different formulation, they will remain on the market," he said.

Health authorities previously had focused on product contamination as a possible cause for the rare fungal infection.

Investors took the company's news as a good sign, bidding shares of Bausch up $5.16, or 11.6 percent, to $49.60 on the New York Stock Exchange; the shares touched a high of $50.10 earlier in the session.

Banc of America analyst David Maris, however, said the loss of a $100 million product should make investors "more concerned, not less concerned." Maris said he believes some of the stock move may be short covering.

"We believe that investors should be wary of Bausch & Lomb shares as we think investor attention will turn to potential liability and risks to the greater ReNu franchise," Maris said in a note to clients.

He estimated that potential liability from the infection outbreak could rise into the $500 million to $1 billion level.

CEO Zarrella, said the costs associated with the recall would be in the range of $50 million to $70 million. Bausch also faces about $100 million in lost sales and will now need to spend on marketing to recover lost market share.

"You should think of 2006 as a rebuilding year. That is the way I'm thinking about it," Zarrella told investors.

Company officials initially thought the infection may have been linked to a potential contamination at its plant in Greenville, South Carolina.

FDA SUPPORTS THE MOVE

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Monday it supported Bausch's recall of the MoistureLoc brand.

The FDA in a conference call said the Fusarium outbreak appears to be related to the design and use of Bausch's ReNu with MoistureLoc formula.

Daniel Schultz, director of the FDA's centers for devices and radiological health, said the inspection of the Greenville plant did turn up a number of problems with the manufacturing practices at the facility that were unrelated to the outbreak.

Schultz said agency will issue that report in the next few days.

Bausch executives said in a statement the company's probe found "no evidence of product contamination, tampering, counterfeiting or sterility failure."

The company had pulled the product in the United States last month and parts of Asia earlier this year after it was linked to a rash of the fungal infections.

On May 4, Bausch said a "handful" of cases of the infection have been confirmed in Europe.

Authorities in Singapore had earlier linked a number of cases of the same infection to use of a Bausch & Lomb ReNu solution, and Hong Kong had asked the company to pull ReNu from store shelves, although testing did not show a problem.

Bausch said the MoistureLoc recall, effective immediately, extends even to countries where the company has seen no unusual trends in Fusarium infections, including China, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Rochester, New York-based Bausch said it has not estimated the full financial impact of the recall.

The company recommended that former MoistureLoc users switch to ReNu MultiPlus or ReNu Multi-Purpose, which have a different formula from that of MoistureLoc.

The FDA said data so far did not indicate problems with ReNu MultiPlus or ReNu Multi-Purpose brands.

Bausch's MultiPlus brand, however, has also been linked with the fungal infection in reports by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The brand makes up 20 percent of confirmed cases among contact lens wearers that the CDC has evaluated.

Manufacturing plants in Greenville, South Carolina; Milan, Italy; Bhiwadi, India and Beijing will shift production from MoistureLoc to the ReNu MultiPlus and ReNu Multi-Purpose formulas.
