Work related question-friends and bosses

Let's say you and your colleagues share a boss. Your colleagues are friends of yours. Your colleagues have opinions of your boss that you don't particularly share. You dislike your boss immensely, however, they are on friendly terms with your boss. Not friends, but friendly. They smile, say hi to, etc. Would you give your colleagues the cold shoulder because of this? Or would you be yourself but just refrain from talking about this person in front of your colleagues?

I would refrain myself from talking about your boss in front of your friend . You truly don't want anything you could say, come back and maybe affect your job.

i would do this part. In the same sense that i wouldn't want anyone telling me What i should think about someone, i wouldnt 'punish' someone else for having a different opinion of a person than i do. Chat Icon

I would definitely be myself but not talk about the boss with the friends. That's no reason to lose your friends. In general, no matter how much I disliked my boss, I would always be cordial and say hello...I've had some bosses I have HATED, but I was always civil and almost friendly (but apparently you can read me like a book when I hate people).

Regardless of who my friends are, how friendly I am with them or their relationship with a boss, I would always be on my guard when discussing my boss if I didn't like him. You never know when the tide can turn.

totally agree!!

I think giving them the cold shoulder would be a little extreme.

I agree with this. I also think that no matter how good of friends you are (or seem to be) with your co-workers, your career should come first and emotions surrounding them (both good and bad) shouldnt be shown at work.

Re: Work related question-friends and bosses

Thanks for the replies. Basically, I'm the one who's friendly with the boss. I've always believed that you never know you will be your boss one day and the last thing you need is the boss being against you. A co-worker/friend has severe distaste for our boss and recently has become very standoffish towards me. I asked another friend why and she told me it really wasn't conscious but it was because of my 'friendship' with the boss. Meanwhile, I don't go back to my boss with things they've said. I just say to them you have your opinions which I can understand but I can't hate this person. Too much at stake to be on the wrong side of our boss. Anyway, thank you again.Chat Icon
