The weeds......UGH!!!!

About 3 weeks ago I spent a couple of hours in the backyard pulling weeds (not all of our backyard is grass - lots of dirt covered with mulch).
Some of these things were like 3 feet tall! Some were these freakish super-prickly things.

Fast forward to this past weekend - DH and I spent another 2 hours pulling MORE weeds! And there were a bunch of huge ones that weren't there a couple of weeks ago.
Now I truly understand the expression "growing like a weed".

Jeez, how do you get rid of these stupid things???!!! There's no way we can keep up. We'd have to use gallons of weed killer (plus, I'm afraid to use any chemicals since the dog is in the backyard a lot).
This is our first backyard so we have no clue what we're doing......

We just put down preen (weed killer) about 2 weeks ago. It seems to be doing the trick.

ETA: Just saw you have a dog. I don't know if preen would be pet friendly. Have you tried going to a nursery to speak to someone?

That's been on my list of things to do for a few weeks now Chat Icon
I don't know why I'm such a procrastinator!

ETA: I just looked up Preen - it says not to let any pets near the area during application. So it may be ok once it's settled into the soil. But I'll have to do some more research....
Thanks!
