I'm sooooo sick....can the baby catch it?

I'm so sick...like I don't have a voice, I have strep throat and a sinus infection and ear infections. It hit me like a ton of bricks today (and I had to call in sick to work my first week back from maternity!). I'm worried Katie can catch it from me. Can she or does she still have the antibodies she was born with and she won't get it?

Usually they have the antibodies to get them through the first few weeks of life. I didn't think sinus infections/ear infections were contagious. As for strep throat, it's unlikely that she would cacth it from you but step up the practice good handwashing.


Question: My 3-year-old has strep throat and I'm worried that my 6-month-old might get it too. What should I do?

Answer: I think this is a reasonable worry, although it's very rare for babies to develop strep. We're not sure why, but the theory is that maternal protections against the bacteria are passed from mother to infant in the uterus and remain throughout the first year.

The good news is, once your sick 3-year-old has been on antibiotics for 24 hours, he's no longer contagious. In the meantime, keep the kids separated so as not to let them share fluids, such as drinks, kisses, or drool.

Another note: The incubation period for strep is two to five days, so if your baby was exposed and isn't showing signs of getting sick after about a week, he probably isn't going to.

I had strep when DD was an infant. The ped. said babies can't get strep until they're at least a year. I can't exactly remember why, something to do with not having something or other. I hope you feel better!

I got sick too when my son was an infant and he never caught it. I just washed my hands constantly.
