Teaching Summer School

I started summer school today and found out I will be teaching 8th grade special ed. ss/eng., science and math. I have never taught 8th grade before and now have to come up with material. They gave us no books or anything. This is going to be a lot more work then I thought. Chat Icon

Re: Teaching Summer School

I talked to my chairperson b/c he taught 8th grade math and he gave me some info. But I have no idea about 8th grade science. I had to ask the kids what topics were covered. Now I am looking through my s.s. book I had from teaching 7th grade. Thank G@d we only have two days this week.

Re: Teaching Summer School

same thing happened to me last year, which is why I probably won't teach summer school ever again. it's just not worth the $$ if you have to create everything. and without textbooks, you are probably going to have to give them a ton of dittos.

good luck!

ETA: you might want to look at the NYS Standards for those subjects. 8th grade is a pretty important year from the state's perspective, so I bet the standards are pretty good!

Eek- good luck!

I taught English- haven't taught 8th grade in a while though. Did they give you ANYTHING?

Otherwise, the way it's done in NYC is to work on one full-blown writing piece through the whole session. Usually it's non-fiction, like a feature article. Then the reading, whatever it is, supports the writing, so the kids would also read lots of features while writing their own. Memoir is another good genre- lots of good memoirs out there.

This is my region in NYC- they put their literacy SS curriculum online- Region 1 Literacy page.

I can't help with science, but this is a blog of a science teacher who has a lot of links to resources for teaching science on the right side of her page. Ms. Frizzle
