Computer Question

My work computer was just upgraded with Windows XP.

When I try to open multiple Internet Explorer windows, it won't do it. Lets say I have the a nytimes window open, and i click on a link in an article. The nytimes window will close, and the link will open a new window.

Or, if i manage to get more than one IE to open up, if i try to open another one, the rest of them will close.

How can I fix this? It is making me crazy! Chat Icon

Re: Computer Question

Its possible that your computer cannot handle the Windows XP. Did the people that upgraded your PC to XP do any internal component upgrading, like Memory?

My computer at work has been dragging ever since they upgraded me to Microsoft 2003. Thankgod I am getting a new lap top soon though. My PC is 5 years old. I have 512mb of memory but there are so many programs on this pc that it cannot handle it

Thanks Scott, the computer is a brand new Dell, 2 Gigs of ram. I don't run any really complicated programs- just Ms office.

I checked the internet settings, but there isn't anything i can see that would close all of my windows. Chat Icon

Re: Computer Question

this is your office computer part of a central network (like you need id and password to get in)

if thats the case, IT can have settings on a ton of things (like this for example) or there could be a glitch in the upgrade process.

seems to be set to only have 1 open IE window.

i asked my IT guy, who doesn't know why its doing that.

i asked my coworkers, and their computers aren't doing it, either.

thanks for your suggestions, though!

Re: Computer Question

Are you sure that it's not opening multiple windows but you are only seeing one at a time?

I'm having a hard time explaining, but iInstead of getting like 5 windows across the bottom of your screen, they open onto one another. Usually if you click on the one window you can "choose" which screen to open.

If that is the case, you may just have to change the setting to have open multiple windows at a time.

I know what you are talking about- somtimes the computer does this. One little tab with numbered IE windows. i liked that feature!

But now it is just closing them all. Chat Icon

In internet explorer, go to Tools, Internet Option, Advanced Tab, Under "browsing", UNcheck the box that says "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts"

Do you have a popup blocker installed?

When you click on a link on a page maybe it is considering it a popup and blocking it?

try: Open internet explorer, go to tools, internet options, advanced tab, press restore defaults button. See if that helps.

Just curious if you've rebooted your computer since you've changed your options?
