Wood floors in kitchen

Does anyone have wood flooring in their kitchen? If so, do you like it? Find it harder/easier to clean and maintain than tiles?

Re: Wood floors in kitchen

I have wood floors in my kitchen, but my parents replaced their tile a few years ago with wood flooring and I actually like it a lot better.

When I was young, as soon as anything fell out of the fridge or if I dropped a bowl it would hit the tile and always break, but for some reason with the wood floor it takes the impact better. That was the very first thing I noticed.

I really like it a lot, but the only downside it that my parents had this mat to brush your feet laying on the wood floor (there is a side entrance right near the kitchen) that was vaccummed but never really picked up or moved. Recently it was picked up to discover that all the flooring underneath it had warped. They suspect that when the floors were cleaned and when people dragged snow in, the water or fluid trapped under the mat and no one realized it. Just a heads up.

Re: Wood floors in kitchen

We just had wood floors installed and they are beautiful. They clean so easily, just wipe them up with water, then dry them. They are so much easier to clean than any tile and with tile, I feel like the grout always looks messy.

I always wash my kitchen mat every week and make sure there is no liquid underneath. Any moisture on a wood floor will cause it to rot away.

Thanks for the info!

Did you or your parents (for Beth) use the same wood throughout the rest of the house or was the kitchen flooring completely different?

Im thinking if I should use the same flooring in our dining and living room as well.

Its the same flooring throughout the kitchen, dining room, living room and front entry way. It looks a million times better and so much more open.

Great, that's what I was thinking of doing as well. I wasnt sure if we should break it up for some variety, but you're right, it would look alot more open this way. thanks again Chat Icon

Re: Wood floors in kitchen

If you don't like tiles because they break easily they also have the laminate flooring that looks like tile except you don't have to worry about cracking. My parents did this in the entrance way and it looks like tile. I actually didn't know the difference till I helped her clean!!!

Welcome! a break up may be nice, what about some border inlays or something? I have to say when I walk in from the side entrance and I can see straight down the house (through the kitchen, eating area and living room) it does look nice that the floor runs smoothly through it.

I love this look too, but I'm curious how can you clean the wood floor? I mean to disinfect like with tile - I use bleach with tile.

They sell spray cleaners with ( I think) alcohol in them.

Re: Wood floors in kitchen

I have wood floors in my kitchen and HATE them. They are the same floors as the rest of my house. If I redo the kitchen, I plan to get porcelain tiles that look like wood, since I love the look of the hardwood floors. The wood is just not good for any area that is subject to liquids, and unfortunately we have a section of our countertop by our sink that always drips water onto the floor. Also, the dirt builds up a lot faster and you really have to clean often, or dirt will get stuck in the grooves between the wood planks. It's just a lot of work to have them in the kitchen - I think tile is much easier.

That's so funny b/c I feel the exact opposite. I feel like no matter how much you clean the grout always looks dirty.

We've never had a problem with grout just the hardwood - strange, huh.

Not yet - but will soon. I plan on putting in hw in my kitchen real soon....can't wait. I am not a fan of tile and love wood. Did my research and can't find a good reason not to.

I have woods floors in my kitchen ( renting) & hate them. They aren't finshed--they may have been waxed at one point, but it was never kept up , if it was.

Anything that drips on the floor stains & you can't ealy clean besides sweeping or vaccuming.
I do like the look of wood floors though.

For sealed wood floors, I used to use Murphey's Oil Soap.
