Tipping at restaurants
Ok, so on another board I'm on I saw that people from all over the country are saying that now the standard tip is 20%, 15% is considered an insult.
DH and I always double the tax, which we thought is what most people around here did. Are we undertipping?

Re: Tipping at restaurants
I always double the tax and if its great service I throw in a few extra bucks. I always hear that the U.S. is most gracious in tipping so I assume the double tax tipping is most appropriate.

Re: Tipping at restaurants
Doubling the tax is more then 15% in this area...I think the sales tax in Suffolk is 8.625% which would mean you are tipping 17.25%. I usually tip 20% for service and if the service is excellent - I will tip about 25%. I also tip on food and beverages which a lot of people don't do.

Re: Tipping at restaurants
Since tax is 8.75% (I think) that is below 20%...doubling the total will give you 20%. For example, a $32. bill would be $6.40 tip - depending on service you could round up (or down).

Wow, 25% is very generous. We always tip on the total bill. And if the service was really good we add to the 2x tax, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't insulting anyone. There are a few places we really like and we go frequently, wanted to make sure we weren't getting sneezers or anything.

Re: Tipping at restaurants
Interesting, I always thought NY'ers tipped more then other parts of the country. I am a chronic over tipper - I usually start at 20% of the total and round up. If it's someone we are friendly with and always get great service from it's more like 25%.

Use DjPiLL's method to quickly figure out 20%.
Total bill is $47.34
Remove the last digit
$4.73
Double that
$10 bucks (approximately)
Thats 20%

I used to waitress so I really appreciate good service plus to me, what is a few bucks more - nothing to me but if everyone did that for the waitress, she would have a great night.
