Annoying neighbor...would you say something?

Most of our neighbors are really great. But we have one neighbor whose son works in television so I guess he's got alot of money. He's known my DH since he was a baby and he's always comparing...no, more like gloating about his son.

DH was talking to him a few days ago and the conversation went something like this:

DH: We are thinking of moving to a new house out east...

Neighbor: Why?

DH: Because we want a nicer house, new construction, more property, etc... you know a nicer living situation in general...

Neighbor (and I quote): "Oh, you mean like MY son. Like nice big walk in closets, 400 suits and 200 shirts, 100 pairs of shoes"... and on and on and on

Now he is an older gentlemen and besides this constant gloating about his son and trying to compare my DH to him, he really is a nice guy. DH is fed up with this and hates running into him now because it happens EVERY time. Would you (or your DH if he was in this position) say something or just excuse him as a proud old man?

I'd just excuse him, but not as a proud old man, as a dumbass old man. People like that are speaking from their own insecurities. I'd tell DH not to worry. And you never know, DH's dad could talk about him that way, too!

I wouldn't say anything...I would just not stop and talk to him anymore. Say hello or goodbye, that's it. I'm sure he's just a proud dad of his son...but he shouldn't have to explain to you how much $$$ the kid is making.

This is why I don't talk to my neighbors Chat Icon

Your thinking of moving...I owuld just let it go. he sounds like the type of person who pushes people away because he is too proud and brags too often.

I would just let it go as a proud father. No need to one up when you have such a great life, wife & son.

eta. He doth protest too much about it too. My grandmother used to brag about my cousin to everyone she met. Meanwhile, the cousin hadn't called her because he was "too busy with his job" (otherwise know as "jail" but she didn't know about it).

I would let it go...but I wouldn't talk to him anymore. Then when you move, you can tell him to enlighten the new neighbors about your son and all his shoes.Chat Icon

Re: Annoying neighbor...would you say something?

I'd probably make some snide remark back.
Like if the son was not married or had no kids I'd say, yeah I could have more clothes too but I find my spouse and my child are way more important to me and I enjoy spending money on them instead.
Just cause I'm a beeyotch.

Sounds like DH's mom Chat Icon

I just would say something like "Oh how nice for him" and leave it at that. My mom has always refused to play the brag game and she shows so much more class than those who do.

Re: Annoying neighbor...would you say something?

I'd just let it go. Saying something would create a bigger situation and is it really worth it? So what the old man likes to gloat about his son, all that matters is that you guys are content with yourselves. I'd let him compare away.

If you are planning to move, I'd just ignore it.
