Cars - I have a lot of questions! Need input!

So, I think I posted last year about how my car was about to die. I decided to keep it since I only drive it to and from work 4 miles each way, but now it is really about to die.
I am very undecided about what to get for myself. I don't know whether to lease, buy new, or buy used. And I am not sure if I should get a car or SUV, or what make or model.Chat Icon
Maybe that is why I kept my crappy car for so long, I cannot make up my mind. I will welcome all input and advice, and if anyone has a DH or knows someone who works at a car dealership that would be great also.

Some info:
*Drive to and from work 4 miles each way. However, unhappy at work so that might change. We used DH's car (company car) on the weekends.
*Can be a car or SUV, but do not want a gas guzzler
*May be TTC next year, so car has to be safe and roomy
*I get invoice price through work on some makes of cars (nissan, hyundai, ford, gm, mazda, suzuki, inifinty)
*I want to keep the cost low (less than $300 a month and will be willing to put $3K down) because I don't know what is going to happen in the future (maybe SAHM, starting our own business, buying investment properties.. these are all possibilities)

I have never leased before. What are the responsibilites if something breaks on a lease?

HOw great of a deal is invoice price? Example: would it be worth it to buy new at invoice price rather than a certified used car?

Also, how accurate are the pirce you see advertised in the newspaper?
For example, this NIssan altima seems pretty cheap to me.

Re: Cars - I have a lot of questions! Need input!

We just bought a Explorer...
but only because my DH works close by.

If you are unsure about where you are going to be working and could be adding on the miles...
I think i would stay away from the trucks...

Especially with gas prices rising and RISING

Re: Cars - I have a lot of questions! Need input!

I have a Honda Civic and love it. It's a '99 I bought new, and it's been great. Great gas mileage, affordable price...DH has an Altima and I like it, but it does use more gas than mine. The Civic isn't too too roomy though. I think fine for a car seat or two though.

Julz I bought a Nissan Altima 18 months ago and LOVE IT! Mine is fully-loaded with leather and sun roof. It is a great car, I have 0 problems. It is very roomy, great back seat and trunk - perfect for kids.

Good luck!

Thanks everybody!

My mom, sister, aunt, and cousin all have the civic, so I would prefer to get something different. Would that be weird if we all had the same car?Chat Icon

You can get a 0% loan on any Jeep for 5 years.

Since you are only putting 3k down... that is BIGTIME savings (thousands) in interest you wouldn't have to pay.

I know you said no gas guzzler... but the Commander looks like a NICE ride. Chat Icon

You can never go wrong with Nissan and Toyota. And for the link that you posted, base price is probably 14K but that's probably without anything in the car. Once you go there and start adding all different things to the car, it adds up.
With the gas prices rising, I wouldn't invest in a truck right now.
You may want to consider the Suzuki Aerio as well. It's 4 cylinders and it has 4-wheel Drive so it's great for the winter. And they are pretty roomy inside.
Also check Mazda 3.
