What age are infants diagnosed with colic?
Is it something that comes up right away within the first month or can it develop later.....
How did you know your child had it?
Just curious. Thanks.

Re: What age are infants diagnosed with colic?
It can definitely develop later on. I have friends whose baby was a darling until 3 months and then from 3-6 months he cried 24/7. I forgot what the technical definition of colic is, but I think it's something like a baby who cries for at least 4 hours out of the day. Colic is often undiagnosed Acid Reflux and/or bad gas.
I think my daughter was borderline Colic. It didn't start until about 3 weeks, and then from 3 weeks - 10 weeks it was simply awful. Whenever she was awake she was miserable. Crying, fussing, etc. The only thing that would help was to keep her close to me using the baby carrier, or taking her for a stroll. I know that a big part of the problem was gas.
Edited to add - remember, though, most babies go through a "witching" hour. Generally, until about 3 months, most babies have a period of the day where they fuss/cry, and that's not colic, just normal baby behavior. It's usually early evening - starting around 5pm or 6pm, and most babies grow out of it by 3 months.

Re: What age are infants diagnosed with colic?
Usually 3 weeks. he never really got diagnosed. My first pediatrician just thought I was an over anxious new mom and told me that all babies cry. I asked him to switch to Nutramigen and he told me "that is for babies that cry alot and are colic". HELLO...my baby used to scream everynight from 9-11. It started to die down around 3 1/2 months. It is like a blur now. It was the most trying time of our lives. That is the thing I most worry about with the next child.
Usually if the child is fed and everything else is okay and they still cry I guess it's colic. He was also very fussy, gassy and a terrible sleeper.
I remember when I went to my gyno for my six week visit he asked how the baby was. I told him that he has colic. His reply was "I am so sorry for you"
I can offer any help or advice anytime.
