Puppy food brands...

I just got blasted from some lady in my complex...she asked me what I fed Sammy and I told her NSAL told me to give her Purina puppy chow. I thought she was going to report me or something! She said this food is "garbage," but NSAL told me to give her the Puppy Chow (mixed with Iams canned food). I hate the wet food and want to wean her off it, so should I also slowly switch to another dry brand?

I am sorry that you got blasted from someone. That is not helpful Chat Icon

Unfortunately Purina Puppy Chow is not the best dog food. Some of the ingredients they use as fillers are known to cause kidney & liver damage, and are hard for your pup to digest.

There are a whole bunch of great foods out there, but you will notice quite a price difference. Here is a list of the best foods for dogs from another website I visit:

Artemis
Azmira
Back to Basics
Bench & Field Holistic Natural
Blue Buffalo
Burns
by Natural Brightlife
California Natural
Canidae
Cloud Star Kibble
Drs Foster & Smith
Eagle Pack Holistic
First Mate dog food
Flint River
Foundations
Fromm Four Star
Go! Natural
Hund-n-flocken
Innova
Innova Evo
Karma Organic
Lick Your Chops
Lifespan
Limited Diets
Mmillennia
Natural Balance Ultra
Newman’s Own Organic
Organix
PHD Viand
Pinnacle
Prairie
Prime Life
Royal Canin Natural Blend
Solid Gold
Timberwolf Organics
VeRUS
Wellness
Wenawe
Wysong

New to 2005

By Nature Brightlife
Canine Caviar
Cloud Star
Evolve
Nutro Natural Choice Ultra
Premium Edge
Wellness Simple Food Solutions

I feed Wellness. I used to feed Chicken Soup for a Dog Lover's Soul, but since that plant had a food recall I have not used them since & I removed then from the list. I also hear grat things about Blue Buffalo. If you do decide to change the food, definitely do it gradually, mixing various portions of the new & old food over a period of a few weeks.

Good Luck.

Re: Puppy food brands...

My pooch also came from NSAL, but I knew the Purina was not the best I could give him. SO I looked at pet stores around me to see what was easily available AND healthy for my dog. I ended up with Nutro Max Natural. He loves it, his skin and coat are perfect, and he has been really healthy. There are a lot of choices on the market, but a quick internet search, will help you with your answer. Good Luck!

Re: Puppy food brands...

I agree with the Nutro, that's the best I could find for my puppy, the Ultra was the best for his stomach (it has oatmeal in it)....they probably told you to give the puppy purina because that's what they had been feeding him/her and it's not good to just switch foods. if you want to switch start mixing in the new food with the purina and gradually phase the purina out, that way you won't give your little munchkin diarrehia....

I don't see it on MsMBV's list but as per out vet's rec, we feed our pups IAMS Puppy. When they get older, we'll feed them IAMS Adult, always dry food. Good luck switchingChat Icon

All I can say is thank God I have some patience! We cannot wait to settle into a routine once she is allowed outside. She gets her second set of vaccines on Saturday, so hopefully she can go out then. She was supposed to get her shots this past weekend, but she's on antibiotics for a cold Chat Icon

We definitely need to continue working on not jumping and nipping. She loves her toys which is a great diversion for the nipping.

same here...we started on IAMS puppy for large breeds, then we switched her to adult, then to Lamb & Rice formula since she has a sensitive stomach

Reason why NSAL recommends Purina is because they get it for free or very very cheap.

Purina makes a better puppy food called Purina One. A bit more money but worth it.
Warren Eckstein recommends it and he is fantastic when it comes to animal knowledge.

Re: Puppy food brands...

Emmie wouldn't eat Iams or Nutro. She will only eat Caesars and Kibbles and Bitts. i was sick of spending spending so much on food that she wasn't eating at all. So, my vet said it is better to give her what she will eat than for her not to eat anything.
