Puppy help please!!!!

I am posting this here because it gets more traffic than Pets - and I am kind of nervous.

Molly (see avatar) has been scooting around on her butt for the past day or so. It's like she is sitting on her butt and then moves around on the floor.

Tanaholic looked this up for me and said it's Anal Sacs -- so I just looked it up and I think that's def. what it is. I am a little freaked out- I feel bad and I hope she's not in pain.

Has anyone's pet had this? I am going to call the vet first thing in the morning. The websites all say that it's easy to squeeze this sacs and that some nasty fluid comes out....I'm not ready for that.

TIA for ANY info you may have on this - I just hope my little Molly isn't in pain.

Re: Puppy help please!!!!

She's not in pain...just uncomfortable. When you take her to the vet he will drain them (it's just a little squeeze), but I have to warn you...It stinks!
BTW, I had a Doberman who had a problem with that and I had the vet show me how to do it myself so I didn't have to bring him in once a month. It's not that big a deal, you just have to make sure you do it outside.
Good luck to you and Molly!!

Re: Puppy help please!!!!

Gizmo does this once a year or so.

The vet will drain them. Beware - the crap that comes out of there STINKS. stinks stinks stinks.

You should check her butt once in a while, and be on the lookout for more. If you spot something, or if she starts scooting again, a warm compress usually brings down the swelling and may even drain a small one.

Its not a huge deal - and your baby will be just fine!!!!! Chat Icon

Ditto...sometimes they might get a little stinky.

My vet said that the anal glands usually "drain themselves" but if the dog is "scooting" around then she needs to be brought in to the vet to get the glands drained. Chat Icon

Re: Puppy help please!!!!

It would last until it got drained...They just scoot and start licking their butts like crazy. Some dogs just have a problem with it and some don't.

Re: Puppy help please!!!!

My pek had the same problem, it really is nothing to worry about... If you bring her to the vet the will sqeeze her glands, and if you take her to the groomers sometimes they do it too. The vet can also show you how to do it but it can smell really bad so try and do it when you give her a bath...

Re: Puppy help please!!!!

Haha I realize this is an old post, but it got me laughing- I know it's no joke, I feel really bad for any dog that has this problem, but it made me think about that Stanley Steemer commercial with the dog that scoots its butt along the carpet.Chat Icon
