If they are under 3 months you really should do it rectally.

Other than that I use this one. It's the same kind most peds are using

Temporal Artery Thermometer

Re: Best way to take temp besides rectal...

At his age, rectal is the best. I dont completely believe any other temp method personally. Not a big deal when they're bigger but you want to be quite accurate when they are small.

There really is no good way besides rectal. You won't hurt him, just hold him down with one hand.

Re: Best way to take temp besides rectal...

I just couldn't do rectal. I used a thermometer pacifier and I thought it worked great.

Now I use the temperal one that Stacey posted. It does take many different readings, so I found the most accurate was under the arm.

We felt this way as well until she had a virus. The ped kept asking me what is her rectal temp and I said when I take it hurts her. The ped said "it does not hurt, it is just uncomfortable. Besides, we need to have an accurate temp to determine whether or not she needs to go to the hospital". I got over it quickly. I figured that if her temp was high, they would take the rectal temp at the docs office anyway. Better we take it than a stranger at the peds office, right?

Gracie is OK with it now, no more squirming.

Same thing happened to us and when we got to the ped's office, they ped took it rectally as well and so did the hospital.

I also take it rectally and this is the thermometer I use. I put some vasaline on it, have him on his back grab his legs like I when I put a diaper under him and insert it. He does squirm, I actually don't think he feels it. It is so fast.thermometer

We do it the same exact way. My ped. told me that rectal is the best way when they are so small.

Re: Best way to take temp besides rectal...

That is a really good thermometer to hvae and it isn't very expensive so it is definately well worth it.

They do have pacifier thermometers although we always do rectal. The first few times I was so nervous but I got over it, made sure I used vaseline, etc.

I was always told rectal in infants is the most accurate.
