I don't mean toddlers or infants. Do you think older kids (ages 7-13) play with toys, or is it all video games now? I remember getting together with my friends and playing with fashion plates, my little pony, barbie etc...

Do kids still do that?

I think a lot of the things we loved as kids have falled by the wayside in favor of things with bells and whistles. I think a lot of toys need to light up and make noise for the kids to be interested. It's a little sad to me.

I dont know but I do know they dont have as many cool things as we did! We used our imaginations and played for hours....kids today have video games and computers and IPODs!

My niece & nephew in that age range do -- esp my nephew. He is big into cars and anything that can be put together. My niece likes those craft/jewelry making kits etc.

I know. Several years ago, my cousins were visiting us from Europe (they were 10 and 8) and my sister and I made a fort and we were going to play "pretend" . They had no idea what to do. The thought of imagining something too boring so they just went and watched tv.

It might be a small thing but I really want our kids (when we have them) to have imaginations. I don't think I will ever want a DVD player in my car because I used to love just looking out the window when my mom was taking us somewhere, especially when I first learned to read- I had the best time with all the signs when I realized that I knew what they said!

Video games took over everything. It's all electronic stuff and no more imagination.

yes and no.
My nephews were over last weekend. We had a movie on but they would rather play with the castle and dragon that my sister brought over. Then they went down stairs and played with the pool table and were playing horsey (climbing on DH). Oh, my nephews are 3 and 6 1/2. The older one has a game boy that he would pull out from time to time. we have X-Box and every channel on tv. Sometimes they wanted to use their imagination.
It totally depens on the parents. If the parents plop them in front of the TV to entertain them, then no kid will ever need to use his imagination to entertain.

We're trying to stall on the video game front. I think the vintage toys are better for them - at least in terms of making them more creative.

Little kids are definitely into dolls, superheroes, etc. It's very cute to hear them doing the different voices of their babies or Batman.

My 9 & 7 year old nieces are into Polly Pockets & Bratz dolls (think Barbie but sluttier). My 13 yo nephew is all about skateboarding & video games.

My kids are 4 and 6. My 6yo does like video games but they both play with old fashioned "use your imagination" toys too. My 4yo loves her dollhouse, my 6yo loves his Power Ranger action figures (no batteries/noise for either of those) and they both love plain old wooden building blocks.

My 13 year old cousin will play with games, more than toys.
He likes board games; Cranium, Rumikub, chess; card games, UNO Jenga, and I bought him a little logic puzzle travel game thign & he seemed to like it.
He brings games when he comes to visit & has different people to play with.

With his freinds I think he plays video games or sports.

I don't think I really played with toys after about 6th grade.

My friend's sister just moved to LI from Israel. She took her kids to the park to play (She has 4 kids- 3 under 5 years old). She said they were the ONLY people there. She couldn't believe it that here, kids don't play in the park on a nice day. Chat Icon
