babies and water

At what age did your baby begin drinking water. My ped had told me togive ds my friend on the other hand said she never heard of newborns needing to drink water. Lately I fell like he is thirsty all the time. I will offer him the formula but he wants the water. He will drink about 2 ounces at a time. BTW he is 3 months old. TIA

My pediatrician told me to give my kids formula rather than water. He said that they need the nutrients, not something that is 0 calories that will fill them up.

etd. this advice is 2 years old though maybe things have changed.

Re: babies and water

I give Jared filtered or bottle water when he has the hiccups. I've been doing that since 3 months. I would never give him water in place of his formula.

I've only given Jake water when he has the hiccups also. He only takes a couple of sips.

I read that you aren't supposed to give them water to drink because it will fill them up and then they may not drink as much formula as they should.

We don't give Miranda water. She only got it one day when she was refusing to eat and her GI said to give water and pedialyte if she wouldn't take formula or breastmilk.

My ped. said that they don't need water. In the summer when we went for walks they said we could give her water if she was hot.

My doctor did tell me that to get her to learn to use the sippy cup I do put about 2 oz. of water in and she mainly plays with the cup to watch the water swish around. She drinks very little. She's 9 months old.

My doc told me no water for my son (he's 3 weeks old). He says it serves no nutrional value and just "washes out" the nutrients the child has gotten from breast milk or formula.

Re: babies and water

At his six month check-up, our pediatrician said we could give Jesse water and/or juice, but no more than four ounces per day, and only if he won't drink any more BM. We were told he really needs the nutrients from BM.

Re: babies and water

Huh... my ped has told us to give Ryan at least 1 oz of water a day...since he was a few days old...

Ryan loves it....

All the moms at the daycare I work for thought this was wonderful...

He dosent get water instead of his formula (so he is still getting the proper amount of nutrients).... It supposed to be very good for there BM, and just good for them in general...

Every Doc is different!

thanks for the input...

I called the ped he said no more than 2 oz. a day. I told them he is not drinking it in place of his formula but in addition to it. They told me that if he still wants more to bring him in. I find it amazing that he knows the difference between the bottle of water and the bottle of formula! It could also be that the co-op is 95 degrees and we can not do anything about it.
