Question about wedding gift giving...

DH's cousin is getting married soon. On their wedding website there is a message that says,
"We would be honored to have our friends and family celebrate our marriage with a donation. It brings us joy to know that we can indirectly improve the quality of life through our charity registry."

Would you give to the charity, or give a check to the couple instead? Or give half to the couple, half to the organization? I've never been to a wedding that requested a donation in lieu of gifts.

I would donate the entire gift to charity and write something in their wedding card letting them know you donated.

If they are asking you to donate, then I'd respect their wishes and donate.

Re: Question about wedding gift giving...

Thanks everyone! That's what I was thinking; I guess just the fact that it was family made me think we should give the couple something.

My best friend did that. It was not his first wedding, it was hers. They are very well off & had everything they wanted. She was bought herself for Paul Revere silver for her wedding present to herself. I doubt I could've afforded a spoon.

I wrote a check to the charity she selected, took pictures at her wedding & put them in an album for her.

Re: Question about wedding gift giving...

I would donate - but I think I would also get them a little gift too

I think this is a great idea, too. After going through the wedding planning myself, and seeing so many great photos on LIW, I got some good ones for the last wedding I went to, when the photographer wasn't around.

I would also give to the charity, because that is what they want you to do.

Re: Question about wedding gift giving...

I would give the $ to the charity of their choice, but specify to the charity that the gift is in honor of the marriage of your family members. Ask if the charity can send the couple a card stating that a donation has been made in their honor.

Re: Question about wedding gift giving...

I am also in the process of planning a wedding and we too have more than we could ever ask for. We have registered at www.justgive.org, and my fear is that no one will use it and give us the cash instead. If they are suggesting you make a donation, I would do it because i am really hoping people do the same for us!

I am glad everyone here said the same, and i can tell you I would much prefer a donation and no gift at all, or a donation and a small well thought out present that would be meaningful than another cash gift.

Hope that helps!
